Virtual discussion: “The Day of Mourning and Hope”

On 14 June 2021 Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia marks 80 years since the first wave of mass deportations carried out by the Soviet regime. Tens of thousands of people, including babies and elderly from the Baltic states died in Siberia and many more came back to their countries to find their former lives destroyed.
 
To commemorate this tragic occasion, the embassies of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia in Washington, D.C. host a virtual discussion “The Day of Mourning and Hope: the Living Memory of Soviet Deportees and Displaced Persons of the Baltic States.”
 
 
The discussion will be opened by:
– H.E. Audra Plepytė, Ambassador of Lithuania to the U.S.
– H.E. Māris Selga, Ambassador of Latvia to the U.S.
H.E. Kristjan Prikk, Ambassador of Estonia to the U.S.
 
Panelists:
– Rūta Šepetys, an internationally acclaimed American – Lithuanian author of historical fiction, author of “Between Shades of Grey”;
– Mara Lazda, Ph.D, Associate Professor of History at Bronx Community College;
– Marija Čyvas, President of the U.S. Lithuanian Youth Association, participant of “Mission Siberia’2019”
 
The discussion will be moderated by Karl Altau, Managing Director of Joint Baltic American National Committee (JBANC)
