May 10, 2024The Estonian American National Council Announces Grant Opportunity for Students Attending EIHM International Summer School in Estonia
(For immediate release, April 25, 2024) The Estonian American National Council (EANC) – Eesti Rahvuskomittee Ühendriikides (ERKÜ) is pleased to announce a new grant in the form of a travel stipend ($1250) for two eligible Estonian-American upper secondary and/or university students to participate in the Estonian Institute of Historical Memory’s (EIHM – Eesti Mälu Instituut) Summer School 2024 – The Fateful Year of 1944.
From August 4 – 9, 2024, students of Estonian heritage from around the world will come together in Estonia to learn about 20th century Estonian history, including the Mass Flight of 1944, when many Estonians fled Soviet persecution. This year marks 80 years since that fateful year., and EANC is working on several commemorative initiatives to help bring more awareness to this tragic part of Estonian history. The summer school will include visits to the cities of Tallinn, Tartu, and Viljandi, and will be a wonderful experience for students to make new friends and learn about their ancestral homeland.
To encourage attendance by students from the United States, EANC will offer travel stipends (in the amount of $1250 each) to two students of Estonian heritage from the United States. Eligible applicants must inform the EANC Youth Committee ([email protected]) of their interest and intent to attend the program. The travel stipends are contingent on acceptance into the EIHM summer school, and will be awarded on a first come, first served basis.
Participation in the summer school is free of charge as the EIHM covers tuition, catering, and accommodation costs for all accepted students. Interested students will need to submit a short application to EIHM by Tuesday, April 30, 2024, and also email the EANC Youth Committee at [email protected] to let us know that you have submitted your application. The EIHM will make all admissions decisions for the summer school. EANC will then notify stipend applicants about funding decisions.
We encourage all Estonian American students to consider this unique opportunity!
