Celebrating Estonian Independence: San Francisco area

Come celebrate the 108th anniversary of Estonian independence in San Francisco on Saturday, February 28! The event is co-hosted the San Francisco Estonian Society and Korp!Vironia USA Koondis.

Speakers include:

Dr. Maarja Merivoo-Parro is a public intellectual dedicated to exploring the history of mentality at the crossroads of culture and politics. She is a Fulbright scholar and Marie Curie fellow with extensive field work experience among Estonian communities from Abkhazia to Australia. Her most recent book received the Best European Learning Material Award BELMA at the 2025 Frankfurt Book Fair. Dr. Merivoo-Parro also bridges academia and society through documentary films, television and radio programs. In 2026, she is serving as Visiting Scholar at Stanford University.

Dr. Indrek Sarap is an active duty army officer of the Estonian Defence Forces with 25 years of experience in various command and staff positions, including deployments to Afghanistan in 2006 and Mali in 2013-2014. Indrek is an honour graduate of the Baltic Defence College and has a masters degree from the Estonian Military Academy. Indrek continues his research in military decision-making as a visiting scholar at Stanford University (CISAC) and as part of the Future of the Decision-Making project.

We also welcome ESTONIAN HONORARY CONSUL IN SAN FRANCISCO CHRISTINE MORGAN, partner in intellectual property law at Reed Smith. THE SAN FRANCISCO ESTONIAN COMMUNITY CHOIR will also perform.

A FESTIVE RECEPTION precedes the program, with COFFEE AND DESSERT to follow – join us for a spread of savory bites, dessert and coffee, a raffle, and socializing.
