DESCRIPTION:The Seventh Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America\, returns this November 6-17 @ Scandinavia House NYC\, and with virtual screenings across the U.S. \n\n\n\n\nPurchase tickets here \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe 7th Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America is back November 6-17\, 2024\, with a mix of in-person and virtual screenings of the best new films from the Baltic region. From November 6-10\, festival-goers can enjoy screenings and events at Scandinavia House in New York. For those across the U.S.\, virtual screenings of six of the films will be available to viewers from November 9–17. Screenings will be accompanied by a range of in-person film talks with directors\, producers and actors; details will be released in the coming weeks. All in-person evenings will be followed by receptions. The full fall program lineup has now been announced. The festival kicks off on Wednesday\, November 6 at 6:30 PM with the U.S. premiere of Life and Love (dir. Helen Takkin\, Estonia\, 2024). Set during the Great Depression in 1933\, this compelling drama follows Irma\, a young woman who leaves her rural home to pursue a writing career in the city. There\, she is pulled into a toxic relationship with her boss at a local print shop\, and as political tensions rise\, Irma realizes that love and ambition come at a steep cost. On Thursday\, November 7 at 7 PM\, the documentary The Mammoth Hunt revisits 1968 Lithuania\, where theater director Jonas Jurasas directs a popular and thinly veiled anti-Soviet production titled “The Mammoth Hunt.” When word gets back to Moscow\, he flees to the U.S.\, while the play’s cast stages a final act of defiance. Director Aistė Stonytė tracks down recollections from its surviving participants. Screenings on Friday\, November 8 include the North American Premiere of A Postcard From Rome (dir. Elza Gauja\, Latvia\, 2024) at 6 PM. In this gentle love story\, Latvian couple Ernests and Alvīne use a lottery scheme to fulfill their lifelong dream of traveling to Rome. As they embark on their holiday\, it becomes clear that Alvīne’s Alzheimer’s disease is rapidly progressing. At 8:15 PM\, director Marko Raat‘s 8 Views of Lake Biwa\, Estonia’s contender for Best International Feature at this year’s Academy Awards\, is a poetic fairy tale set in an Estonian fishing village. In the wake of a recent tragedy\, two teenage girls watch ships sail to Kyoto\, while villagers create erotic art and engage in spiritual spells; hailed as “one of the most unique films of the year” (Cineuropa).Saturday\, November 9 begins with a re-screening of Life and Love at 12 PM. At 3 PM\, a program of Baltic Shorts will screen six short films\, with two from each of the Baltic countries including live-action\, animation and stop motion\, including Ootid (U.S. Premiere); On Weary Wings Go By (NY Premiere); The One Who Knows (U.S. Premiere); and others. Making its North American Premiere at 5 PM\, Maria’s Silence (dir. Davis Simanis\, Latvia\, 2024) is a powerful historical drama about Maria Leiko\, a famous silent-film actress forced to abandon her career to join Skatuve\, the Latvian State Theater in Moscow\, where she was manipulated amid purges of political enemies; a film “rich in historical references and complex visual poeticism” (Cineuropa).At 7:30 PM\, director Saulė Bliuvaitė‘s gritty coming-of-age drama Toxic makes its New York Premiere. Dreaming of escape from the bleakness of their rural Lithuanian hometown\, two young teens form a unique bond at a modeling school\, where they are pushed to violate their bodies in increasingly extreme ways; “impressively tough-minded…with glimmers of tenderness and humor (Variety) and “gritty and keenly observed” (Screendaily). Sunday screenings begin at 2 PM with Parade (Paradas\, dir. Titas Laucius\, Lithuania\, 2022)\, a Baltic comedy following a former couple’s decision to finalize their divorce through Catholic Court — with unexpected consequences; “a cracking comedy” (Screen International). At 4:15 PM\, the Estonian documentary Kelly — Someone Else’s Dream explores the dark side of competitive sports with the story of freestyle skier Kelly Sildaru\, who shot to fame as an X-Games gold medalist at the age of 13 but was later revealed to have been abused; “an uplifting message of hope and empowerment” (Cineuropa). The in-person portion of the festival wraps up at 7 PM with the NYC premiere of Flow (dir. Gints Zilbalodis\, Latvia/France/Belgium\, 2024). This visually stunning animated adventure follows a brave cat who\, after a devastating flood\, teams up with a capybara\, lemur\, bird\, and dog to survive. THis virtual event will feature Dr. Mart Kuldkepp\, Professor of Estonian and Nordic history at the University College\, London. \n\n\n\nThe discussion will focus on the ramifications of the Biden administration’s de-escalation policy and the future of U.S. support for Ukraine. We will also cover Dr. Kuldkepp’s most recent research on Euro-Orientalism and its ramifications for the perceptions of the Baltics within Europe. \n\n\n\nMart Kuldkepp is Professor of Estonian and Nordic History at University College London (UCL). He completed his PhD dissertation at the University of Tartu\, Estonia in 2014 and joined UCL in 2015. He has also recently held the Estonian Diaspora Visiting Professorship at the University of Tartu. \n\n\n\nMart specializes in Scandinavian and Baltic history and politics (especially foreign and security policy\, and early 20th century wars)\, but also has an interest in the Baltic Sea Region more broadly\, including Germany and Russia. His recent book\, Nordic Estonia (2024\, in Estonian) explores the role that Estonia’s Nordic identity played in Estonia’s independence before World War II. His next book is The Shortest History of Scandinavia (2025\, in English). At Yale\, he is John S. Saden Visiting Professor of Baltic Studies\, where he will be teaching a postgraduate course about the independence of the Baltic states. \n\n\n\n\nRegister here

This prestigious award recognizes an outstanding work\, research\, or lifetime achievement. The Estonian American National Council (EANC) gives out this award with our Estonian partners\, the Estonian Writers’ Union and the municipality of Luunja.  \n\n\n\nThis year\, we invite nominations for two awards: one honoring a distinguished lifetime contribution and the other celebrating an exceptional cultural achievement by someone newer to their field. The EANC Henrik Visnapuu award recognizes works on Estonian themes—published in Estonian or other languages—in the fields of literature\, music\, theater\, art\, or historical research. Eligible works must have been published or presented in the past two years (2023–2024) either abroad or in Estonia\, with preference given to works by or about the Estonian diaspora and works that promote Estonian culture and history globally. The works do not have to be in the Estonian language\, although it is encouraged. Nominations can be based on a single work\, a series of works\, or a significant and impactful lifetime contribution.  \n\n\n\nCandidate nominations can be submitted by individuals or organizations from Estonia\, the United States\, or other countries.  \n\n\n\nSubmissions should be sent to the Chair of the EANC Visnapuu Award Committee\, Sirje Kiin\, at sirjekiin@hotmail.com\, or submitted using the online candidate nomination form below. A variety of fabulous flavors wil lbe showcased.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nContest rules: \n\n\n\n-Voting will be in two categories: meat and vegetable pirukad. \n\n\n\n-Pirukad must be premade. \n\n\n\n-Preparers should make the pirukad for about 50 people. The largest group of workers consisted of over 2\,000 Japanese Americans who had been interned during the first years of the Second World War and had been looking for a new place to live. After the war refugees from many countries in Europe came to Sea-brook Farms\, amongst them were some 900 Estonians and 200 Latvians.‍They all had lost their homes and had to start again. Working at Seabrook farms meant seven day weeks with ever changing shifts\, work that was both physically and mentally draining. Amongst all the hardships they still found ways to keep up their cultural traditions and create new possibilities for their children.At the same time jealousy and distrust drove the Seabrook family apart. Instead of creating a future for his sons\, Mr Seabrook took it away from them. \n\n\n\nThe film sheds light on the puzzling history of the Seabrook family and their factory workers; people of different countries and cultural backgrounds who had no other place to go to. \n\n\n\nSeabrooki farmi asutajate perekonna ajalugu meenutab Kreeka tragöödiat. Pärast sõda tulid Seabrooki taludesse tööle pagulased mujaltki\, paljud Euroopast. Nende hulgas oli umbes 900 eestlast ja 200 lätlast. Nad olid kõik kaotanud oma kodud ja pidid oma elu taas nullist üles ehitama hakkama. Töö Seabrooki taludes toimus seitse päeva nädalas\, mis oli nii füüsiliselt kui vaimselt kurnav. Kõigi raskuste keskel leiti siiski viise\, kuidas hoida oma kultuurilisi traditsioone ja luua järeltulijatele uusi võimalusi. Kadedus ja usalduse puudumine aga süvenes ja viis Seabrooki perekonna lõpuks lahku. Selle asemel\, et oma poegadele parem tulevik rajada\, otsustas härr Seabrook hoopis selle neilt röövida. Film heidab valgust Seabrooki perekonna ja nende tehase töötajate mõistatuslikule ajaloole – erinevatest riikidest ja kultuuridest pärit inimestele\, kelle jaoks Seabrooki farm oli ainus lootusekiir. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHelga Merits is a documentary filmmaker with Estonian roots living in Holland. After completing a successful study of philosophy at the University of Amsterdam\, she went on to work as a newspaper and radio journalist in Holland and Belgium. Kontsert on valitaval kanalil kirjeldustõlkega. \n\n\n\nETV tele-esilinastused\n\n\n\n13.10 Teatrietendus “Orzel. Laidoneri ööd” \n\n\n\nTeater Nuutrumi etendus “Orzel. Laidoneri ööd” heidab pilgu Eesti Vabariigi Sõjavägede ülemjuhataja Johan Laidoneri ja tema poolatarist abikaasa Maria elutuppa septembris 1939. Ülemjuhataja päevad ja ööd on täis ärevust\, Euroopa on sõjas\, Saksamaa ja Venemaa on sõlminud mittekallaletungipakti ning ootamatult saabub Tallinna reidile Poola allveelaev Orzel. \n\n\n\nNäidendi autor on Loone Ots\, näitlejad Peeter Tammearu ja Liina Tennosaar\, lavastaja Jaanus Nuutre ning režissöör Eva Katariina Taimre. \n\n\n\n“Elu ja armastus” Autor/allikas: Kaader filmist\n\n\n\n22.00 Mängufilm “Elu ja armastus” \n\n\n\n1933. aasta kuumal suvel tuleb sisukamast elust unistav noor Irma maalt linna sugulase Lonni juurde. Juhuse tahtel palkab keskealine trükitööstur Rudolf Irma endale teenijaks. Rudolfi sarm ja salapära paeluvad Irmat ja ootamatult tärganud tunded ei lase tal ühel hetkel enam mehe lähenemiskatseid tõrjuda. Ehkki Rudolf vannub Irmale armastust\, paljastub peagi edeva mehe liiderlik ja manipuleeriv pale. \n\n\n\nA. H. Tammsaare samanimelisel romaanil põhineva mängufilmi režissöör on Helen Takkin. Osades Karolin Jürise\, Mait Malmsten\, Loviise Kapper\, Ursel Tilk. \n\n\n\nETV2 filmiprogramm\n\n\n\nETV2 on kavasse lisanud mitmeid uusi dokumentaal- ja animafilme. 24. veebruari õhtune kava hoiab meeles Ukrainas toimuvat. \n\n\n\n11.20 Dokfilm “Omariikluse katkematu punane lõng” \n\n\n\nRahvusväeosade looja\, eestlaste esimese parlamendi esimees\, riigivanem ja eksiilvalitsuse juht August Rei oli kõigi Eesti omariiklusele oluliste sündmuste keskmes ent ometi on jäänud suure riigimehena Pätsi ja Laidoneri varju. August Rei (1886–1963) elutööd ja isiksust tutvustab temaga nooruses isiklikult lävinud väliseesti kirjanik ja arst Enn Nõu. \n\n\n\n13.00 Animafilm “Taaskohtumine” \n\n\n\nRežissöör Ülo Pikkovi film ühest saarest ja ühest vanast naisest\, keda saatus on uhtunud oma kodusaarest väga kaugele. Tulles lõpuks tagasi koju\, elavad aga tema majas juba ammu teised inimesed. Animatsioonfilm on loodud Ruhnu saarelt pärit leidobjektidest ning see räägib saare traagilisest ajaloost\, kus kõik elanikud lahkusid 1944. aasta sõjakeerises oma kodust ja kui aastakümneid hiljem avanes neil võimalus taas kodusaart külastada\, elasid seal juba uued inimesed. \n\n\n\n20.20 Dokfilm “Mille Sina võtaksid?” \n\n\n\nKodu. Sinu kodu. Sinu ruum. Sinu mälestused. Sinu asjad. Üks silmapilk ja see kõik on kadunud. Ukraina sõjapõgenike fotoportreedest koosneva kunstinäituse tarbeks valminud intervjuude kollaažis räägivad oma sõjakogemustest Igor Mariupolist\, Nina Hmelnõtskõist\, Natalija Donetskist\, Sofija Harkivist\, Juri Prõbirskist\, Mariana Lvivist\, Tata Zaporižžjast\, Ann Kiievist\, Viktor Mariupolist\, Amet Bahtšisaraist\, Dmitri Donetskist ja Petro Kiievist. \n\n\n\n“Vastupanuteade” Autor/allikas: Kaader filmist\n\n\n\n20.45 Dokfilm “Berliin. Lootuse vaksal” \n\n\n\nIga raudteejaam on kui uks uude ellu\, aga seekord oli Berliini keskvaksal selleks ukseks paljudele Ukraina põgenikele. See on lugu sõjapagulastest\, kelle maailm pole enam kunagi endine. Näeme tegutsemas Saksa vabatahtlikke ja kuuleme Ukrainast lahkuma sunnitud inimeste lugusid. Nad kõik jõudsid rongiga Berliini. \n\n\n\n21.30 Dokfilm “Vastupanuteade” \n\n\n\nVenemaa pidevate rünnakute tõttu on Harkivi Riiklik Akadeemiline Ooperi- ja Balletiteater olnud juba pikalt suletud. Ometi jätkuvad selleski linnas kontserdid\, esinemised\, haridus- ja kultuurielu\, olgu siis parklates või pommivarjendites. Kaks artisti on otsustanud ka teatrihoonesse elu tagasi tuua. \n\n\n\nVikerraadio\n\n\n\n22.02 kell 12.05 “Kajalood” \n\n\n\nVabariigi aastapäeva eel on Kaja Kärneril külas presidendi abikaasa Sirje Karis\, kelle ametikohustuste hulka kuuluvad mitmesugused esindusvisiidid nii Eestis kui ka välismaal. SOS lastekülade\, sünnitusmaja fondi\, laste ja noorte annete arendamise patrooni Sirje Karise südamemure on Eesti laste kõrval ka Ukraina lapsed\, kelle vene võim on okupeeritud aladelt röövinud ja küüditanud. Ukraina presidendi abikaasa Olena Zelenska kõrval on Karis üks nende laste eestkõnelejaid ÜRO kõnetoolis ja maailmas. Saates räägib ta laste ja noorte vaimses tervise turgutamisest\, aga ka enda lapsepõlvest ja kooliajast ning oma kolmest lapsest. \n\n\n\nKajalood. Külalistega vestles saatesarja ja raamatu autor Piret Kriivan. \n\n\n\n22.02 kell 14.05 “Loetud ja kirjutatud” \n\n\n\nVabariigi aastapäeva eel räägib Maarja Vaino kirjandussaates juttu kirjaniku ja diplomaadi Jaak Jõerüüdiga\, kellel ilmus eelmise aasta lõpus esseeraamat “Sõjast äratatud mälu”. \n\n\n\n24.02 kell 7–11 “Vikerhommik” \n\n\n\nVabariigi aastapäeva “Vikerhommik” pakub sisuka rännaku mööda Eestimaad. Saade valmib Tõrvas\, Raplas\, Keilas\, Tartus ja Tallinnas ning vahendab pidulikku lipuheiskamise tseremooniat Toompealt. Eesti elu ja tuleviku üle arutlevad staažiga peaminister Andrus Ansip\, tänavu teenetemärgi saav muusikaõpetaja Maie Kala ja humorist Toomas Kall. Kuulajad saavad teada\, mida arvavad Eestist abituriendid ning kuidas tähistavad vabariigi aastapäeva taliujujad. \n\n\n\nSaatejuht on Johannes Vedru. \n\n\n\n24.02 kell 12.05 “Heli nälg. Alar Karis” \n\n\n\nEesti Vabariigi sünnipäeval on eetris muusikasarja “Heli nälg” erisaade erilise külalisega. President Alar Karis\, melomaan\, jutustab\, mis teda muusikaliselt mõjutanud on ning milline oleks maailm muusikata. Saates peatutakse ka tema lühikeseks jäänud muusikuteekonnal. Alar Karisega ajab muusikajuttu Andres Oja. \n\n\n\n24.02. kell 14.05 “Jutusaade. Tõnu Kaljuste” \n\n\n\nSaatejuht Piret Kooli vestleb riikliku elutööpreemia laureaadi\, koori- ja orkestrijuhi Tõnu Kaljustega. “Me oleme ikka sipelgad\, kui mitte veel väiksemad olendid siin maailmas\,” usub Kaljuste. Milline on tema iseseisvuse lugu\, kuidas ja kes teda eestlaseks kasvatasid ning mismoodi ta 40 kirjale täpselt allkirja andis\, sellest Kaljuste saates räägibki. \n\n\n\nVabariigi aastapäeval kõlab Vikerraadios ainult eesti muusika. \n\n\n\nKlassikaraadio\n\n\n\nKell 11 on Klassikaraadio eetris “Muusikatuba”\, mis on pühendatud eesti muusikale. Kõlab eesti heliloojate looming Heino Ellerist Tõnu Kõrvitsani\, Arvo Pärdist Jaak Johansonini. Muusikat valib Liina Vainumetsa. \n\n\n\nKell 13 on stuudios presidendi teenetemärgi pälvinud lastekirjanik ja luuletaja Jaanus Vaiksoo. Juttu on eesti keele ja kirjanduse õpetamine\, raamatute lugemine ja raamatuaasta olulisus. Kirjanikuga vestleb Ivo Heinloo. \n\n\n\nKell 20 algav “Ooperiõhtu” toob kuulajateni suurejoonelise galakontserdi “Vikerlastest sündinud ooper”\, mis jutustab eesti ooperi lugu läbi 90 aasta. Galakontserdil kõlavad katkendid 24 eesti algupärasest ooperist.
