SUMMARY:The Day of Reading Estonian Literature Together 2022
DESCRIPTION:Estonian author Anton Hansen Tammsaare\n\n\n\nJanuary 30th is the birthday of one of the most renowned Estonian writers\, Anton Hansen; also known as A. H. Tammsaare (1878-1940). Some have even proposed making the day a national holiday to celebrate Estonian literature. To celebrate\, the Estonian Institute and the Estonian Children’s Literature Centre invite you to read together this year\, too. \n\n\n\nThis year’s story is Eno Raud’s Three Jolly Fellows (Naksitrallid)\, the legendary children’s series (first published in 1972) with Edgar Valter’s unforgettable illustrations that just about every fully-grown Estonian has vivid and sentimental memories of. The books have also been turned into animated films accompanied by music by Sven Grünberg. \n\n\n\nJoin Estonians around the world in reading this piece of Estonian literature together! The Estonian Children’s Literature Centre has scanned an excerpt of the book into 15 languages (see the bottom of the post for the links). Read the excerpt to your pupils\, children\, friends\, or pets\, in the language you feel most comfortable\, record your impressions in any way you like\, and connect to other readers all over the world on Facebook with the hashtag: #loemekoos2022. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe excerpt is available in: Estonian\, English\, Russian\, Finnish\, Polish\, German\, Slovak\, Danish\, Czech\, Ukrainian\, Hungarian\, Norwegian\, Georgian\, Latvian\, Lithuanian. \n\n\n\nFor extra fun and some great 20th-century nostalgia\, check out the animated film on YouTube. And be sure to attend the event on Facebook. \n\n\n\nA four-part fairy tale series\, Naksitrallid (Three Jolly Fellows)  tells the adventures of three small men in a world that borders on the fantastic: the composed and close-to-nature\, Mossbeard; the irritable city dweller\, Halfshoe; and the sensitive poet\, Muff. The first two books deal with a chain of events set off by human tampering with the laws of nature; an old woman’s inexplicable love of cats lures a horde of felines to the city. Risking their lives\, the diligent and ready-to-help fellows drive the gang of cats out of town\, but the outcome brings trouble to city and nature alike: rats take control of the urban environment\, all the birds are devoured in the forest\, and the insects consequently launch their own wave of destruction. Only through great peril do Mossbeard\, Halfshoe\, and Muff manage to bring the cats back to the city and restore environmental balance.

SUMMARY:Enhancing NATO's Collective Deterrence: A Conversation with Former Supreme Allied Commanders Europe
DESCRIPTION:The Atlantic Council’s Transatlantic Security Initiative\, part of the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security\, and the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center host the public event on Enhancing NATO’s collective Deterrence on Friday\, January 28th from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. ET via Zoom. Featuring two former Supreme Allied Commanders Europe\, this conversation will examine opportunities for NATO to improve its collective defense posture as Russia continues threatening to up-end the security order in Europe over increased aggression towards Ukraine. \n\n\n\nAs the Moscow-generated crisis in eastern Europe unfolds\, it has become clear that the Kremlin hopes to leverage the crisis to renegotiate the architecture of Atlantic security on terms favorable to Russia and is willing to escalate militarily against Ukraine in order to achieve these goals. In response to Russia’s troop build-up\, NATO has strengthened certain aspects of its defense and deterrence posture\, including increasing the readiness of certain units and adding naval assets and aircraft to NATO missions. Yet to further respond to and prepare for Russian escalation in Ukraine\, there is more NATO could do militarily to strengthen defense and deterrence. \n\n\n\nTo discuss NATO’s military role in maintaining collective security in the Euro-Atlantic area and potential options for strengthening NATO’s posture and readiness to respond to Russian escalation or a potential new invasion\, the Atlantic Council is honored to be joined by two former SACEURs\, General Philip M. Breedlove\, USAF (Ret.) and General Wesley K. Clark\, USA (Ret.). General Breedlove and General Clark will discuss what options are available to the Alliance and the United States to stand up to Kremlin aggression and ensure the security of our allies. \n\n\n\nRegister for what promises to be an engaging event on a critical topic for the Alliance. Join the conversation on Twitter with #StrongerWithAllies as we consider how NATO can face this critical challenge. \n\n\n\n\nRegister here\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nFeaturing a discussion with:General Philip M. SUMMARY:World Premiere! Singing Revolution: The Musical
DESCRIPTION:Singing Revolution is a new musical with a catchy Euro pop score. It tells the tale of star-crossed lovers against the beautiful\, moving and timeless true story of Estonia’s 1987 song-filled\, peaceful uprising\, known the world over as the “Singing Revolution” against the Soviet Union\, which eventually restored the Republic of Estonia’s independence in 1991. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTony Spinosa\, Co-creator: As a passionate theatre professional for over 30 years\, I have always been on the lookout for the inspiration for an original Broadway musical. When I first learned about Estonia’s Singing Revolution\, a light bulb went off in my head; people using the power of peaceful resistance\, literally singing as a shield against Soviet attacks\, is a story that I know I needed to tell. What a beautiful\, moving and timeless story\, and the premise for the perfect musical. \n\n\n\nThe Musical premieres in Los Angeles\, January 15\, 2022! Get your tickets and share the word today! SUMMARY:The New York Baltic Film Festival (2021)
DESCRIPTION:IN PERSON at Scandinavia House \n\n\n\nand \n\n\n\nONLINE across the US \n\n\n\nJOIN US! \n\n\n\nThe Other Cinema of Northern Europe: The three Baltic states of Estonia\, Latvia\, and Lithuania have been producing motion pictures since 1910. While not as well-known as those in Scandinavia and other parts of Europe\, their industries have met challenges in one era or another that ultimately only galvanized their creative ambitions for features\, documentaries\, and animation shorts. Through the screening of the latest productions\, the New York Baltic Film Festival offers New Yorker’s and audiences across the U.S. an unprecedented opportunity to enjoy the best in Northern European filmmaking and see the world through Baltic eyes. \n\n\n\nAbout the Festival: \n\n\n\nEstablished in 2018\, the annual New York Baltic Film Festival is presented by Scandinavia House and organized by the Consulate General of Estonia\, Consulate General of Lithuania and Daris Delins\, former Honorary Consul for Latvia in New York. Programming support is from the Estonian Film Institute\, National Film Center of Latvia\, and Lithuanian Film Center. Funding for the festival is courtesy of governments of the Estonia\, Latvia and Lithuania and by the generous donations of members of the Baltic community in New York. Additional support to the festival is from the Estonian Ministry of Culture\, Lithuanian Culture Institute\, Lithuanian Foundation\, Latvia-100\, Embassy of Latvia to the U.S.\, Permanent Mission of Latvia to the U.N. in New York\, American Latvian Association\, Printful\, and the American Scandinavian Foundation. \n\n\n\nEstonian films in the NYBFF program include: \n\n\n\nGood Bye Soviet Union  (Hüvasti\, NSVL) Lauri Randla\, Estonia/Finland\, 2020\, Narrative) \n\n\n\nDawn of War  (O2) Margus Paju\, Estonia/Finland/Latvia/Lithuania\, 2020\, Narrative) \n\n\n\nKratt  Rasmus Merivoo\, Estonia\, 2020\, Narrative) \n\n\n\nA Year Full of Drama (Aasta täis draamat)Marta Pulk\, Estonia\, 2019\, Documentary) \n\n\n\nTickets available through : Box Office — New York Baltic Film Festival \n\n\n\nStill from Estonian film Goodbye Soviet Union. Directed by Lauri Randla\, 2020.\n\n\n\nEstonian film: Goodbye\, Soviet Union \n\n\n\nOriginal title: Hüvasti\, NSVLDir. Lauri Randla\, Estonia/Finland\, 2020East Coast Premiere\, Narrative91 mins. In Estonian and Russian with English subtitles. \n\n\n\nIn this comedic coming-of-age story set in Leningrad 3 — an idealized Soviet town in Estonia complete with a secret radiation facility — Johannes was born prematurely and without a father. Raised by his eccentric grandparents while his single\, politically vocal mother seeks a better life in Finland\, Johannes is beset by issues as he starts attending a new school\, after exposure to the polluted waters on a nearby beach. Now\, on top of being a member of the Ingrian-Finnish minority\, rather than Estonian or Russian like the rest of his classmates\, he is also bald! But then he meets Vera\, to whom he feels an inexplicable pull. \n\n\n\nDirector Lauri Randla rearranges his own childhood memories into a colorful\, nostalgic\, and thought-provoking film following Johannes as he grows older\, which brings confusion that coincides with the final\, turbulent years of the Soviet Union. GOODBYE SOVIET UNION shows the disorientation and bureaucracy that affected those stuck in the middle between the stagnated\, old way of life\, and the promising\, glimmering\, but unknown future. \n\n\n\n“This nostalgic and bittersweet look at life behind the Iron Curtain radiates with charm. With shades of youth classics like Submarine (2010) and Lady Bird (2017)… Goodbye Soviet Union ups the stakes.” – Redmond Bacon\, DMOVIES \n\n\n\nFULL 2021 LINE-UP available here: https://www.balticfilmfestival.com/2021-line-up \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nEstonian films part of the program include: \n\n\n\nGood Bye Soviet Union  (Hüvasti\, NSVL) Lauri Randla\, Estonia/Finland\, 2020\, Narrative) \n\n\n\nDawn of War  (O2) Margus Paju\, Estonia/Finland/Latvia/Lithuania\, 2020\, Narrative) \n\n\n\nKratt  Rasmus Merivoo\, Estonia\, 2020\, Narrative) \n\n\n\nA Year Full of Drama (Aasta täis draamat)Marta Pulk\, Estonia\, 2019\, Documentary) \n\n\n\nTickets available through : Box Office — New York Baltic Film Festival \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nYou should be able to access the films with ease\, but here are some helpful instructions. \n\n\n\nNote\, films are only accessible to viewers in the U.S..

SUMMARY:Online Fundraiser and Auction to benefit LEP 2022 Seattle
DESCRIPTION:LEP 2022 is holding an Online Fundraiser and Auction! \n\n\n\nWhat is it and Why are we doing it? \n\n\n\nWe are doing this online fundraiser and auction to keep up with the expenses of the event. All proceeds will go to assist in reducing ticket prices\, helping keep the event as affordable as possible. Even though the main goal is to raise money\, we have curated a collection of “items” of Estonian heritage and cultural significance. Our hope is that these events strengthen and expand our community by connecting to our Estonian roots— whether through food\, learning of traditions or meeting new friends in a sauna. \n\n\n\nWhen and where does it take place? The virtual fundraiser and auction will take place on the online platform of Bidding Owl\, from Oct. 10-17\, 2022. During that time you will have a chance to buy tickets to both online and in-person events\, classes and experiences which are donated by wonderful people from around the globe. Depending on the item\, a ticket will either be available for direct purchase for a set price\, or the item is up for bid with a set minimum. SUMMARY:A Celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the Restoration of Independence of Estonia\, hosted the Estonian Society of Los Angeles
DESCRIPTION:Program \n12.30 – Arrival\n1 pm – Luncheon\n3 pm – 5pm Docent-led Tour\nThe Estonian Society of Los Angeles is very pleased and honored to celebrate this important milestone for Estonia with a luncheon under the Air Force One at the Reagan Library \nFor Estonia\, a country deeply affected by Russia\,   the words “Mr. Gorbachev\, tear down this wall\,” spoken by U.S. President Ronald Reagan played a very important part in the fight for Estonian independence. It was on June 12\, 1987 that Reagan stood at the Brandenburg Gate and gave what is now known as the Berlin Wall Speech\, viewed by the entire world. The impact of those words is one of the reasons we choose to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the restoration of the Republic of Estonia at The Reagan Library and Museum. \nThe speech included these words:\n“There is one sign the Soviets can make that would be unmistakable\, that would advance dramatically the cause of freedom and peace. General Secretary Gorbachev\, if you seek peace\, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe\, if you seek liberalization: Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev\, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev\, tear down this wall!” \nYou can view it here again: https://www.reaganfoundation.org/ronald-reagan/reagan-quotes-speeches/remarks-on-east-west-relations-at-the-brandenburg-gate-in-west-berlin/ \nAlso\, 2021 marks the 40th anniversary of the inauguration of Ronald Reagan as America’s 40th president.  It’s a year of re-examining his legacy\, re-telling one of America’s greatest stories\, re-living a remarkable run as President\, and introducing an icon to a new generation. \nOur celebration includes a special guest and opening speech\, a luncheon under Air Force One\,  a docent-led tour of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and the amazing Air Force One Pavilion\, plus a self-guided tour of the spectacular special exhibit FBI – FROM AL CAPONE TO AL-QAEDA \nSpace is limited.
