SUMMARY:Freedom Way International DC - Socially Distanced Human Chain
DESCRIPTION:August 23\, 2020 marks the 31st anniversary of the famous Baltic Way protest. About 2 million people joined hands to form a human chain over 400 miles connecting Vilnius\, Riga\, and Tallinn against the Soviet rule. \nTo mark this anniversary\, Lithuanians are forming a new human chain from Vilnius to the border with Belarus to show support for our\, Belarusian\, struggle against Lukashenka’s dictatorship. The dictator has claimed 80% of the vote in the elections that took place on August 9. The people of Belarus have been peacefully protesting ever since despite the brutal crackdown by the riot police. At least 2 people have died so far\, several are expected to remain severely physically disabled for life\, and hundreds more will endure PTSD. \nThe unique situation in Washington\, DC where Belarus\, Latvia\, Lithuania\, and Estonia have embassies and the diaspora populations of all four countries are large\, we have decided to replicate the human chain on a smaller scale and connect the four embassies. \nWe will assemble at the embassy of Lithuania in DC and stretch the human chain down 16th Street NW toward the embassy of Belarus on New Hampshire Ave NW and then on to the embassies of Estonia and Latvia on Massachusetts Ave NW. \nWe are inviting anyone who cares about free and fair elections\, freedom of speech\, and separation of powers to join us. \nWe will post more details on how the chain will be formed and assembly points later in the week. \nPlease dress or bring ribbons and/or balloons in these colors:\nBelarus – white and red (more white)\nEstonia – blue\, black\, and white\nLatvia – red and white (more red)\nLithuania – yellow\, green\, and red \n  \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/347813212894083/ \n  \n

SUMMARY:Muinastulede öö / Night of Ancient Bonfires
DESCRIPTION:A global happening \nWe picked up on the Boston Estonian Society´s call for Estonians to join in this tradition to mark Summer´s peak.  \nAs stated in the BES newsletter: \n`The height of the summer season is upon us with the month of August and usually we are planning for and looking forward to getting together on the last days of summer … with an open view to the wide-open ocean.  The same water that connects many of us to our family\, friends and/or ancestral home far beyond on the Baltic Sea.  As mentioned in our July newsletter\, the Boston Estonian Society’s Annual Summer Days later this month has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  \nAlthough we will not be able to gather in person\, we invite all our members to unite on The Night of Ancient Bonfires\, to be held August 29th.  Gather around a bonfire in your backyard\, at your relatives or closest COVID-free friends to share in the spirit of sea that unites us.  \nYou can register your get together on the website portal:  http://www.ancientlights.eu/en.  Even if you are not on river bank\, lake shore or ocean beach\, light that bonfire. Please send the invitation along to family and friends.

SUMMARY:World Clean Up Day 2020 - Teeme ära!
DESCRIPTION:World Cleanup Day is a civic movement\, uniting 180 countries and millions of people across the world to clean up the planet. In one day.\nVolunteers and partners worldwide come together to rid our planet of trash – cleaning up litter and mismanaged waste from our beaches\, rivers\, forests\, and streets. This world-changing idea began in the small northern European country of Estonia\, in 2008. 50\,000 people united to clean up the entire country in just five hours. Now\, 12 years later the Estonian-born initiative has turned into a global movement that in 2019 united 21 million volunteers and 180 countries to work together in caring for and cleaning up our planet.  \nThis year the organizers decided to put the focus on snuffing out the abundance of littered cigarette butts\, which present a daunting environmental problem.  According to the non-profit Let´s Do It World! campaign´s top activist\, Heidi Solba\, just one cigarette butt will poison up to 1\,000 liters of water\, and will break down in nature into thousands of small pieces of microplastic! Cigarette butts are one of the biggest waste problems to our environment. Whether you put in 15 minutes to pick up a soda can full of cigarette butts or a day in cleaning up a section of the coast line or neighborhood park\, please join the Estonian initiated World Clean Up Day campaign. Can´t get out to clean?  Make a donation to the cause\, instead! But please\, where a mask and adhere to social distancing guidelines.   \nListen here for the challenge Estonian Prime Minister Jüri Ratas posed to his counterparts around the world! Register your team and send pics of your progress to erku@estosite.org! World Clean Up Day 2020 is a great way to get people talking about Estonia! Enjoy!

SUMMARY:New York Baltic Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Tickets go on sale October 1st. The Third Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House returns in 2020 with a virtual version taking place in three sessions: October 15-18\, October 29-November 1\, and November 12-15. \nThis year\, the festival will expand beyond New York to offer a selection of the most exciting and relevant Estonian\, Latvian and Lithuanian films to audiences across the U.S.\, to view in the comfort of their own homes. From Boston to L.A.\, from Milwaukee to Miami\, enjoy the best of Baltic cinema this Fall. \nIn 2020\, NYBFF invites viewers to look at the world through Baltic eyes and experience the full spectrum of human emotions – and\, ultimately\, feel inspired to hope\, dream and seize the opportunity for positive change. \nThis year’s festival will take place in three virtual sessions\, each featuring an Estonian\, Latvian and Lithuanian feature film\, as well as live virtual Q&As with filmmakers and discussion panels.  \nThe inaugural package LAUGH & CRY (October 15-18) will showcase Baltic comedies. The next package STRESS & RELEASE (October 29-November 1) – just in time for Halloween – will present thrillers from the region. The final package LOOKING INWARD & FORWARD (November 12-15) will spotlight the latest critically-acclaimed international festival favorites from the Baltic States. \nNYBFF Head of Programs Jūle Mare Rozīte: “This year is all about being adaptable and finding new ways to move forward. Even though travel is restricted world-wide\, we can still get to know other cultures through art– and what better way is there than by understanding what makes people smile\, what excites them\, and how they see the future. We at NYBFF have had to think on our feet\, and have come up with a compact and powerful program that brings the culture and spirit of the Baltic States to audiences across the U.S. with the best new films from the region. Laugh\, be thrilled\, and get introspective like a Balt!” \nFestival films will be available to ticket holders all over the U.S.\, with one ticket giving the holder access to all films in a package. Each session is limited to 300 tickets in an effort to preserve the intimate and communal NYBFF experience. The sessions will take place over four days (Thursday-Sunday)\, and all films from the session will be available for viewing on a virtual cinema screening platform throughout this period.
