SUMMARY:Webinar: The Fate of Europe: Ukraine\, the Baltic Region\, and Collective Security
DESCRIPTION:The Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies hosts this online roundtable discussion on “The Fate of Europe: Ukraine\, the Baltic Region\, and Collective Security.” \n\n\n\nSince 2014\, the Ukrainian state and society have shown strength and resilience in resisting Russian aggression. Given the decisions of the new United States administration to engage Putin’s Russia and chastise Ukrainian leadership\, will Ukraine be able to continue defending its sovereignty? What are the implications of the recent changes in the US position towards Russia for European security\, including Nordic and Baltic security? How will Europeans approach their collective security in a new era of transatlantic relations? \n\n\n\nThese and other questions will be tackled by Hanna Shelest (Foreign Policy Council “Ukrainian Prism”) Marko Lehti (Tampere Peace Research Institute)\, and Ginta Palubinskas (West Virginia State University). The webinar will be moderated by Daunis Auers (University of Latvia) and welcome remarks will be delivered by AABS President Jörg Hackmann (University of Szczecin).  \n\n\n\nLearn more about the participants on the AABS website. \n\n\n\n\nRegister here

SUMMARY:2025 ALJA Ski Trip - Colorado!
DESCRIPTION:The American Latvian Youth Association invites members of the Lithuanian and Estonain communities to join them for a ski weekend at Copper Mountain\, Colorado. \n\n\n\nThe group will be staying in Silverthorne/Dillon\, CO from March 21-23\, with the option to stay through Monday. There will be options for both Epic and Ikon resorts. People of all ages are welcome\, with a special shout out to Baltic youth (18-35 yrs). \n\n\n\nMore info can be found here https://alja.org/alja-notikumi/2025/3/23/2025-alja-ski-trip-colorado \n\n\n\nhttps://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid02taErTTzitqaJn2mGyB1bnR1hN4NiGT5j5FhSM1f8Qs6oSLEMnHKL9y1u8wzE4aEdl&id=100064656858253&mibextid=wwXIfr \n\n\n\nFrom the Organizers:\n\n\n\n ALJA is helping to sponsor a western mountain ski trip in Colorado on March 21st-23rd. This event will be open to all ages and families that would like to visit. The plan is to stay in the Silverthorne/Dillion area and ski the surrounding mountains. There are numerous options within the vicinity for both IKON ((APPROXIMATE TIMES)….(Copper Mountain – 15 min\, Winter Park -1hr15) and Epic Pass Holders (Breckenridge – 20 min\, Vail – 35min). \n\n\n\nDillion/Silverthorne are neighboring each other and have a variety of restuarants bars\, etc. There is plenty to do around town\, and everything is accessible off the main road through town and from highway I-70. From the airport\, travel times are around 1hr20 minutes\, depending on weather for that day. Driving/carpooling is the only available method of transport. Shuttles are available and can be found\, prices do vary. Please note: ALJA WILL NOT BE PROVIDING transportation. Talk with friends or respond to this interest form to set up carpooling. \n\n\n\nLodging: \n\n\n\nALJA will not be providing lodging\, once again\, please respond to this inquiry form so we can get an accurate headcount. Depending on how many people show interest\, we can group up in Airbnb’s. If you want to spend the money\, Lodging is absolutely available on the mountains. Prices vary and can be extremely expensive. Hotels are also an option\, but Airbnb’s/Vrbo’s are likely to be the best\, most cost-efficient method of lodging. This will also make transportation and carpooling easier. \n\n\n\nSchedule:\n\n\n\nFriday: Arrival. Check in to most hotels/Airbnb’s is usually around 4pm\, plan accordingly. Friday night @ 8pm\, meet up at a bar or restaurant. TBD based on number of people. \n\n\n\nSaturday: SKI/SNOWBOARD all day. IKON pass members will (likely) ski at Copper Mountain. Meet for lunch 12ish@ Downhill Dukes or Jack’s\, Most lifts close around 330-4. Epic pass members (BOOOO Vail sucks 😀 ) can ski wherever they choose. Après ski afterwards or head back to Airbnb’s. Saturday Night 9pm\, meet up at Elevation Bowling for ALJA social event. Elevation Bowl is walkable from most places in Dillion and has a full bar/food\, all ages allowed. The bowling alley closes 1am(ish) and lanes cost $55/hr. We are hoping ALJA will help cover some of this cost of the bowling lanes. \n\n\n\nSunday: Check out of Airbnb/Head home\, or ski with the locals. If people are interested in staying until Monday\, just indicate that in the form. We can get a group with an Airbnb that is rented until then. SUMMARY:“The Perfect Allies”: Examining the US-Baltic Relationship Under the Trump Administration
DESCRIPTION:Watch video recording here\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDespite public statements promising increased support for Ukraine against Russia and a restoration of European hard power\, many of the United States’ major allies still miss the North Atlantic Treaty Organization military spending benchmark of 2 percent of gross domestic product. Since his first term\, President Donald Trump has castigated these nations and their leaders for “freeloading” on American defense spending. \n\n\n\nBut the Baltic states\, which face the greatest threat from Russian aggression\, have consistently held up their end of the bargain\, providing an outsized amount of support for Ukraine and maintaining their military strength despite their relatively small economies. \n\n\n\nWith global threats to freedom on the rise and America’s security commitments growing uncertain\, join Luke Coffey and a panel of Baltic security experts for a discussion on the future of US-Baltic relations in the second Trump administration. \n\n\n\nOrganized by The Hudson Institute. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmb. Kalev Stoicescu \n\n\n\nChairman of the National Defence Committee\, Estonian Parliament \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmb Eitvydas Bajarūnas \n\n\n\nVisiting Fellow\, Center for European Policy Analysis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOlevs Nikers \n\n\n\nPresident\, Baltic Security Foundation \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLuke Coffey \n\n\n\nSenior Fellow\, Center on Europe and Eurasia \n\n\n\n\nEvent website\n\n\n\n\nInquiries: tmagnuson@hudson.org

SUMMARY:Online Discussion with "Ecocide in Ukraine" Author Darya Tsymbalyuk
DESCRIPTION:Register for this important virtual discussion with Darya Tsymbalyuk\, author of Ecocide in Ukraine; The Environmental Cost of Russia’s War. Polity\, 2025. The conversation will be led Tallinn University’s Epp Annus. \n\n\n\nRussia’s war on Ukraine has not only destroyed millions of human lives\, it has also been catastrophic for the environment. Forests and fields have been burned to the ground\, animal and plant species pushed to the brink of extinction\, soil and water contaminated with oil products\, debris\, and mines. The devastation of biodiversity and ecosystems across Ukraine has been immeasurable\, long-lasting and its consequences stretch beyond national borders. In Ecocide in Ukraine\, Ukrainian researcher Darya Tsymbalyuk offers an intimate portrait of her beloved homeland against the backdrop of Russia’s war and ecocide. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nRegister here\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout the participants: \n\n\n\n Darya Tsymbalyuk is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures\, and the Committee on Environment\, Geography\, and Urbanization (CEGU) at the University of Chicago. Her academic papers and public essays explore narratives about environments\, multispecies worlds\, displacement\, embodied knowledge\, and entangled colonial histories of Ukraine. Her writing has appeared on the BBC’s Future Planet and open Democracy websites\, among many other publications. In addition to her research and writing\, Darya also works with images through drawing\, painting\, collage\, and video essays. \n\n\n\n Epp Annus is an associate professor at Tallinn University; she also lectures at Ohio State University (USA). Her interests include Baltic cultures and societies\, Russian imperialism/colonialism\, decoloniality\, and environmental studies. She has published two novels\, some poetry and several children’s books. We are proud to note that in her free time\, Epp happens to also be a council member of the Estonian American National Council. \n\n\n\nThis event is organized by Tallinn University\, Institute of Humanities\, the project PRG2592 “Memory and Environment: The Intersection of Fast and Slow Violence in Transnational European Literatures” and the project TF2324 “Exploring Patterns of Subject-Formation in Estonian Culture\, 1956-1998”. \n\n\n\nSee less

SUMMARY:San Francisco Arts Festival Premiers Estonian Finnish Artist Anneli Kanninen
DESCRIPTION:Date(s) & Time(s):Sat May 10\, 2:30pm\, Sun May 11\, 6:00pmDuration: 30 minsShared bill with: Algiin total duration 70 mins \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProduction Details \n\n\n\nHOMEingHOMEing is a personal exploration of what it means to grow roots in a new place. Arriving in a new country\, culture and a language\, how does one start building home\, while remembering what has been left behind? Through the lenses of different languages and contemporary dance\, this work-in-progress performance researches the sensory and cultural experiences of home\, connection\, and how generations respond to uprooting. \n\n\n\n“With this performance\, I want to honor all the mothers who didn’t have the chance to get a sufficient education and worked their entire lives to put their children through school so that they could get more opportunities in life.” \n\n\n\nArtist BiographiesAnneli KanninenAnneli is a multidisciplinary artist working in the intersections of dance\, theater and languages with a focus on themes of home and belonging.
