SUMMARY:Film Screening @ NY Estonian House: Paradox of Seabrook Farms
DESCRIPTION:A special film screening of the documentary film “The Paradox of Seabrook Farms” by Merits Productions\, hosted at the New York Estonian House. This is an excellent overview and look into the times\, culture\, joys and struggles experienced at Seabrook Farms\, a place that many of us recognize as a hub of Estonian immigrants folowing the Mass Flight of 1944. \n\n\n\nEANC is a proud supporter of this and other films by historian and filmmaker Helga Merits. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArrive for the matinee\, enjoy a discussion and Q&A with the director\, and stay for the following celebration of the 107th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia (Eesti Vabariigi 107. aastapäev)! \n\n\n\nEnjoy the day at the New York Estonian House\, celebrating Estonian history and community. \n\n\n\n11:45 – 1:15pm Documentary viewing1:15 – 1:40pm Q&A with director Helga Merits \n\n\n\nFilm Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fmaFK4j81k&t=48s \n\n\n\nFilm info: https://www.meritsproductions.com/…/the-paradox-of… \n\n\n\nThe Paradox of Seabrook Farms\, 1 hr 30 minutes. \n\n\n\nThe history of the Seabrook family who created Seabrook Farms is similar to a Greek tragedy of betrayal — of creating and destroying possibilities — where behind the scenes\, each with their own heart-breaking story\, a diverse community of refugees and immigrants lived and worked.‍In the 1950s Seabrook Farms was the biggest frozen food processing plant in the US and it needed farm and factory labor. The largest group of workers consisted of over 2\,000 Japanese Americans who had been interned during the first years of the Second World War and had been looking for a new place to live. After the war refugees from many countries in Europe came to Sea-brook Farms\, amongst them were some 900 Estonians and 200 Latvians.‍They all had lost their homes and had to start again. Working at Seabrook farms meant seven day weeks with ever changing shifts\, work that was both physically and mentally draining. Amongst all the hardships they still found ways to keep up their cultural traditions and create new possibilities for their children. At the same time jealousy and distrust drove the Seabrook family apart. Instead of creating a future for his sons\, Mr Seabrook took it away from them. \n\n\n\nThe film sheds light on the puzzling history of the Seabrook family and their factory workers; people of different countries and cultural backgrounds who had no other place to go to. \n\n\n\nSeabrooki farmi asutajate perekonna ajalugu meenutab Kreeka tragöödiat. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHelga Merits is a documentary filmmaker with Estonian roots living in Holland. After completing a successful study of philosophy at the University of Amsterdam\, she went on to work as a newspaper and radio journalist in Holland and Belgium. It was during this period that the idea of making documentaries began to grow; image and sound\, as well as words\, were to influence her work from then on. \n\n\n\nHelga Merits: “In the end\, this is what it’s all about: to convey the story and make people enthusiastic\, hopeful and give them inspiration.” (Eesti Elu\, 21 October 2017)

A day to embrace! (full schedule below) \n\n\n\nEstonia — Estonia is a place for independent minds \n\n\n\nHow do Estonians celebrate Independence Day?\n\n\n\nEach year\, February 24th is marked by fireworks\, concerts\, a parade of the Defense Forces\, and a presidential reception. Families come from all over to admire military units and listen to the orchestras of the Estonian Defense Forces\, Police and Border Guard\, and the United States Air Force. Following the parade\, the Estonian president usually gives a televised speech and bestows state decorations to guests of honor at a national reception. Most events are also broadcast on TV throughout the day. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nHere’s the typical schedule for Independence Day celebrations on February 24th:\n\n\n\n\nThe day begins with a flag-raising ceremony early in the morning. The ceremonial hoisting of the national flag at the Pikk Hermann Tower is open to the public.\n\n\n\nThe parade of the Defense Forces usually takes place in Tallinn’s Freedom Square.\n\n\n\nThe president hosts a public reception and gala concert at the Estonian Theater and Concert Hall.\n\n\n\n\nThere may also be events in support of Ukraine this year\, as February 24th also marks the third anniversary of Russia’s war of aggression. \n\n\n\nSource: visitestonia.com \n\n\n\nETV saatejuhid vabariigi aastapäeval: Andres Kuusk\, Taavi Eilat\, Anu Välba\, Marko Reikop Autor/allikas: Ken Mürk/ERR\n\n\n\n24. veebruari sündmustest saab läbi päeva otsepildis osa nii ETV\, ETV2\, ETV+ kui ka ERR-i portaali ja Jupiteri vahendusel. \n\n\n\nAastapäeva ülekanded 24.02\n\n\n\n7.30 Pidulik riigilipu heiskamineETV\, ETV2 (viipekeeles)\, ETV+\, Vikerraadio\, Raadio 4\, ERR.ee portaal \n\n\n\nKuberneri aias toimuval sündmusel peab kõne riigikogu esimees Lauri Hussar. SUMMARY:Webinar: The Fate of Europe: Ukraine\, the Baltic Region\, and Collective Security
DESCRIPTION:The Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies hosts this online roundtable discussion on “The Fate of Europe: Ukraine\, the Baltic Region\, and Collective Security.” \n\n\n\nSince 2014\, the Ukrainian state and society have shown strength and resilience in resisting Russian aggression. Given the decisions of the new United States administration to engage Putin’s Russia and chastise Ukrainian leadership\, will Ukraine be able to continue defending its sovereignty? What are the implications of the recent changes in the US position towards Russia for European security\, including Nordic and Baltic security? How will Europeans approach their collective security in a new era of transatlantic relations? \n\n\n\nThese and other questions will be tackled by Hanna Shelest (Foreign Policy Council “Ukrainian Prism”) Marko Lehti (Tampere Peace Research Institute)\, and Ginta Palubinskas (West Virginia State University). The webinar will be moderated by Daunis Auers (University of Latvia) and welcome remarks will be delivered by AABS President Jörg Hackmann (University of Szczecin).  \n\n\n\nLearn more about the participants on the AABS website. \n\n\n\n\nRegister here

SUMMARY:2025 ALJA Ski Trip - Colorado!
DESCRIPTION:The American Latvian Youth Association invites members of the Lithuanian and Estonain communities to join them for a ski weekend at Copper Mountain\, Colorado. \n\n\n\nThe group will be staying in Silverthorne/Dillon\, CO from March 21-23\, with the option to stay through Monday. There will be options for both Epic and Ikon resorts. People of all ages are welcome\, with a special shout out to Baltic youth (18-35 yrs). \n\n\n\nMore info can be found here https://alja.org/alja-notikumi/2025/3/23/2025-alja-ski-trip-colorado \n\n\n\nhttps://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid02taErTTzitqaJn2mGyB1bnR1hN4NiGT5j5FhSM1f8Qs6oSLEMnHKL9y1u8wzE4aEdl&id=100064656858253&mibextid=wwXIfr \n\n\n\nFrom the Organizers:\n\n\n\n ALJA is helping to sponsor a western mountain ski trip in Colorado on March 21st-23rd. This event will be open to all ages and families that would like to visit. The plan is to stay in the Silverthorne/Dillion area and ski the surrounding mountains. There are numerous options within the vicinity for both IKON ((APPROXIMATE TIMES)….(Copper Mountain – 15 min\, Winter Park -1hr15) and Epic Pass Holders (Breckenridge – 20 min\, Vail – 35min). \n\n\n\nDillion/Silverthorne are neighboring each other and have a variety of restuarants bars\, etc. There is plenty to do around town\, and everything is accessible off the main road through town and from highway I-70. From the airport\, travel times are around 1hr20 minutes\, depending on weather for that day. Driving/carpooling is the only available method of transport. Shuttles are available and can be found\, prices do vary. Please note: ALJA WILL NOT BE PROVIDING transportation. Talk with friends or respond to this interest form to set up carpooling. \n\n\n\nLodging: \n\n\n\nALJA will not be providing lodging\, once again\, please respond to this inquiry form so we can get an accurate headcount. Depending on how many people show interest\, we can group up in Airbnb’s. If you want to spend the money\, Lodging is absolutely available on the mountains. Prices vary and can be extremely expensive. Hotels are also an option\, but Airbnb’s/Vrbo’s are likely to be the best\, most cost-efficient method of lodging. This will also make transportation and carpooling easier. \n\n\n\nSchedule:\n\n\n\nFriday: Arrival. Check in to most hotels/Airbnb’s is usually around 4pm\, plan accordingly. Friday night @ 8pm\, meet up at a bar or restaurant. TBD based on number of people. \n\n\n\nSaturday: SKI/SNOWBOARD all day. IKON pass members will (likely) ski at Copper Mountain. Meet for lunch 12ish@ Downhill Dukes or Jack’s\, Most lifts close around 330-4. Epic pass members (BOOOO Vail sucks 😀 ) can ski wherever they choose. Après ski afterwards or head back to Airbnb’s. Saturday Night 9pm\, meet up at Elevation Bowling for ALJA social event. Elevation Bowl is walkable from most places in Dillion and has a full bar/food\, all ages allowed. The bowling alley closes 1am(ish) and lanes cost $55/hr. We are hoping ALJA will help cover some of this cost of the bowling lanes. \n\n\n\nSunday: Check out of Airbnb/Head home\, or ski with the locals. If people are interested in staying until Monday\, just indicate that in the form. We can get a group with an Airbnb that is rented until then. We know this is last minute\, but there has been a lot of interest in another ski trip out west.  Any questions or need help with planning\, please contact Davids Lackajs. Feel free to message him on Instagram/Facebook as well. He will also be added to the ALJA Discord channels soon. \n\n\n\n\nRegister or indicate interest here\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent website\n\n\n\nRead more on Facebook
