SUMMARY:New York Baltic Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Tickets go on sale October 1st. The Third Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House returns in 2020 with a virtual version taking place in three sessions: October 15-18\, October 29-November 1\, and November 12-15. \nThis year\, the festival will expand beyond New York to offer a selection of the most exciting and relevant Estonian\, Latvian and Lithuanian films to audiences across the U.S.\, to view in the comfort of their own homes. From Boston to L.A.\, from Milwaukee to Miami\, enjoy the best of Baltic cinema this Fall. \nIn 2020\, NYBFF invites viewers to look at the world through Baltic eyes and experience the full spectrum of human emotions – and\, ultimately\, feel inspired to hope\, dream and seize the opportunity for positive change. \nThis year’s festival will take place in three virtual sessions\, each featuring an Estonian\, Latvian and Lithuanian feature film\, as well as live virtual Q&As with filmmakers and discussion panels.  \nThe inaugural package LAUGH & CRY (October 15-18) will showcase Baltic comedies. The next package STRESS & RELEASE (October 29-November 1) – just in time for Halloween – will present thrillers from the region. The final package LOOKING INWARD & FORWARD (November 12-15) will spotlight the latest critically-acclaimed international festival favorites from the Baltic States. \nNYBFF Head of Programs Jūle Mare Rozīte: “This year is all about being adaptable and finding new ways to move forward. Even though travel is restricted world-wide\, we can still get to know other cultures through art– and what better way is there than by understanding what makes people smile\, what excites them\, and how they see the future. We at NYBFF have had to think on our feet\, and have come up with a compact and powerful program that brings the culture and spirit of the Baltic States to audiences across the U.S. with the best new films from the region. Laugh\, be thrilled\, and get introspective like a Balt!” \nFestival films will be available to ticket holders all over the U.S.\, with one ticket giving the holder access to all films in a package. Each session is limited to 300 tickets in an effort to preserve the intimate and communal NYBFF experience. The sessions will take place over four days (Thursday-Sunday)\, and all films from the session will be available for viewing on a virtual cinema screening platform throughout this period. Festival sessions will be accompanied by virtual filmmaker Q&As and live and interactive discussion panels. \nFestival passes scheduled to go on sale October 1st. See you then ! \n  \nLINEUP: \n \nLAUGH AND CRY:  BALTIC COMEDIES – October 15-18 \nChasing Unicorns (Ükssarvik\, dir: Rain Rannu\, Estonia\, 2019) \nNearby (Blakus\, dir: Alise Zariņa\, Latvia\, 2019) \nThe Castle (Pilis\, dir: Lina Lužytė\, Lithuania/Ireland\, 2019) \n  \nSTRESS & RELEASE: BALTIC THRILLERS – October 29-November 1 \nPretenders (Teesklejad\, dir: Vallo Toomla\, Estonia/Latvia/Lithuania\, 2016) \nFoam at the Mouth (Ar putām uz lūpām\, dir: Jānis Nords\, Latvia/Poland/Lithuania\, 2017) \nInvisible (Nematoma\, dir: Ignas Jonynas\, Lithuania/Latvia/Ukraine/Spain\, 2019) \n  \nLOOKING INWARD & FORWARD: BALTIC SHOWCASE – November 12-15 \nTruth and Justice (Tõde ja õigus\, dir: Tanel Toom\, Estonia\, 2019) \nOleg (Oļegs\, dir: Juris Kursietis\, Latvia/Belgium/Lithuania/France\, 2019) \nThe Lawyer (Advokatas\, dir: Romas Zabarauskas\, Lithuania\, 2020) \n  \nABOUT NYBFF – THE OTHER CINEMA OF NORTHERN EUROPE\nThe three Baltic states of Estonia\, Latvia\, and Lithuania have been producing motion pictures since 1910. While not as well-known as those in Scandinavia and other parts of Europe\, their industries have met challenges in one era or another that ultimately only galvanized their creative ambitions for features\, documentaries\, and animation shorts. Through the screening of both the latest productions and selected classics\, the 3rd annual New York Baltic Film Festival this Fall will again offer New Yorkers an unprecedented opportunity to see the best in Northern European film making. \nEstablished in 2018\, the annual New York Baltic Film Festival is presented Scandinavia House and organized by the Consulate General of Estonia\, Consulate General of Lithuania and Consulate of Latvia in New York. Programming support is from the Estonian Film Institute\, National Film Center of Latvia\, and Lithuanian Film Center. Funding for the festival is courtesy of governments of the Estonia\, Latvia and Lithuania and by the generous donations of members of the Baltic community in New York. Additional support to the festival is from the Estonian Ministry of Culture\, Latvia-100\, Embassy of Latvia to the U.S.\, Latvian Mission to the U.N.\, Lithuanian Culture Institute\, American Latvian Association\, Printful\, and the American Scandinavian Foundation. \n

SUMMARY:Emakeelepäev - Estonia´s Native Language Day
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, March 14th is known in Estonia as Emakeelepäev –  a day to celebrate the country´s native language\, Estonian.  \nThis date was chosen to coincide with the birthday of Estonian poet Kristjan Jaak Peterson\, born on March 14\, 1801. Kristjan Jaak Peterson was one of Estonia’s first literary figures.    \nPühapäeval\, 14. märtsil on emakeelepäev.  \n14. märtsil 1801 sündis Riia linnas Kristjan Jaak Peterson\, kes oma eestikeelses luuletuses küsis esimest korda nii: \n„Kas siis selle maa keel laulu tuules ei või taevani tõustes üles igavikku omale otsida?“ \n  \nHere are a few events organized in celebration of Native Language Day 2021: \n1)      Eesti Instituut kutsub välismaal elavaid eesti lapsi ja täiskasvanuid osalema emakeelepäeva eel luulevõistlusel teemal “Mäng”.    Luuletus tuleb esitada hiljemalt 15. märtsil 2021 veebiankeedi kaudu. \nKa tänavu on vaegkuuljatel võimalik etteütlusel osaleda\, kell 10.25 on ERR-i portaalis üleval video\, kust saab teksti lugeja huulilt lugeda. SUMMARY:Looking North: Conference on Security in the Arctic
DESCRIPTION:The Atlantic Council invites the public to participate in this live virtual public conference. Organized by the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security’s Transatlantic Security Initiative\, in partnership with the Norwegian Ministry of Defense and Royal Norwegian Embassy\, it will also be available for later viewing.  \n“Looking North: Conference on Security in the Arctic” on Friday\, March 19 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. EST on the Zoom platform. \nAs the Arctic draws attention from policymakers on both sides of the Atlantic\, climate change opens access to the region and new and traditional actors seek to exploit the void it creates for economic\, military\, geopolitical\, and other benefit. Against this backdrop\, allied government officials have stressed the need to find a common approach between North American and European capitals to ensure the Arctic remains a secure\, stable\, and prosperous arena. \nTo advance discussion on these and other Arctic security issues\, the Atlantic Council\, in partnership with the Norwegian Ministry of Defense and Royal Norwegian Embassy\, is again hosting its annual conference – Looking North: Conference on Security in the Arctic – bringing together expert and official voices to reassess drivers of change in the Arctic and how the United States\, Norway\, and its allies and partners can collectively approach security in the region. \nThis half-day conference will feature conversations with the Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ine Eriksen Søreide and Minister of Defense Frank Bakke-Jensen\, as well as two discussion sessions featuring experts on Arctic and transatlantic security\, as well as national perspectives from other Arctic nations. \n

SUMMARY:Estonian film and Talk with Director Jaan Tootsen: ´Fred Jüssi: The Beauty of Being`
DESCRIPTION:New Nordic Cinema at Scandinavia House returns in a virtual format! Celebrate contemporary Nordic filmmaking from home in week-long sessions of contemporary feature films and documentaries. The eighth session of the series from April 9 through 15 features the film Aalto (dir. Virpi Suutari; 2020\, Finland)\, a documentary and love story of Finnish modern architecture/design masters Alvar and Aino Aalto\, and the film Fred Jüssi: The Beauty of Being/Fred Jüssi. Olemise ilu (dir. Jaan Tootsen; 2020\, Estonia)\, a documentary about the Estonian biologist\, nature writer\, and photographer Fred Jüssi. The films are available as a special double-feature package. \nWatch the `Fred Jüssi: The Beauty of Being´ trailer here \nThe documentary Fred Jüssi: The Beauty of Being/Fred Jüssi. Olemise ilu looks at the biologist and nature writer\, who has built his life at the crossroads between nature and culture. A true philosopher of the outdoors\, Jüssi has given deep consideration to the fundamental questions of being human. In contrast to an age where success has been defined by hard work\, Fred Jussi: The Beauty of Being is a film about fruitful inline; a praise for “dolce far niente\,” and a hymn for living slowly. Meandering along nature’s secret trails\, gazing at clouds passing by\, and falling into the sweet embrace of smoke rising from a campfire\, with city noise and economic growth left far\, far behind — as Fred Jüssi puts it: sometimes you just have to be sinfully slothful\, and all by yourself.     (62 min. In Estonian with English subtitles.)  \nPurchase tickets: Aalto & Fred Jüssi: The Beauty of Being | Scandinavia House | Get Tickets | elevent (goelevent.com) \nDirector Jaan Tootsen joins for a virtual film talk on Fred Jüssi: The Beauty of Being with author David Rothenberg; click here for details. \nDirector Virpi Suutari joins for a virtual film talk on Aalto with Peter Reed (former Senior Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs\, MoMA); click here for details.  \nFestival films will be available to ticket holders all over the U.S. Each session is limited to 250 tickets in an effort to preserve the intimate and communal experience. The sessions will take place over seven days (Friday — Thursday)\, with all films available for viewing on a virtual cinema screening platform throughout this period. To download viewing instructions and an FAQ\, please click here. \n \nAalto tells the story of Alvar and Aino Aalto\, a couple who shared their lives and great passion for the organic human-scale architecture. Together they worked to create a better and a more democratic modern world; in their philosophy\, the “little human” was always in the center. In 1949\, Alvar suffered the great tragedy of Aino’s death; he later married the architect Elissa Aalto\, and experienced one of his most significant periods throughout the 1950s\, continuing to work until he died in 1976. \nThe film shares for the first time Alvar and Aino’s intimate love story\, highlighting Aino’s importance as an equal architect colleague and visionary designer\, and takes us on a cinematic tour of their creative processes and iconic buildings\, including a library in Russia\, a student dormitory at MIT\, an art collector’s private house near Paris\, and a pavilion in Venice. Combining contemporary film material and rare unforeseen archives\, Aalto dives into the colorful history of modernism\, where we also meet the Rockefellers\, Le Corbusier and László Moholy-Nagy\, with narration both from the designers’ contemporaries and from researchers throughout the world. (102 min. In Finnish with English subtitles) \n  \nFestival films will be available to ticket holders all over the U.S. \n
