SUMMARY:Estonian Independence Day
DESCRIPTION:photo: www.riigikogu.ee\n\n\n\nHappy Estonian Independence Day! \n\n\n\nHead Eesti Vabariigi aastapäeva! \n\n\n\n(scroll down for Estonian) \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRemarks on the 106th Anniversary of the Republic of Estonia\n\n\n\nDear fellow Estonians\, dear friends\, \n\n\n\nThe importance of February 24 is not lost on any Estonian. It was 106 years ago that Estonia declared its independence in the proclamation Manifest kõigile Eestimaa rahvastele. Drafted by a committee of nationally-minded Estonians\, this „Manifest to all peoples in Estonia“ was approved during the short window at the end of WWI when Russian invaders were leaving and the Germans had yet to arrive. We are rightly proud of this bold act and of all those that followedas Estonia fought to gain and regain independence over the next century.  Estonians do not take their freedom for granted. This year\, as we enter the third year of Russia’s vile invasion of Ukraine\, historical events continue to ring loudly in our collective memory. \n\n\n\nWhereas February 24th\, 1918\, marked the birth of the Republic of Estonia\, it wasn’t until two years later\, February 2\, 1920\, that the Tartu Peace Treaty was signed to mark the end of Estonia’s War of Independence\, and in which Soviet Russia recognized the independence of the Republic of Estonia in perpetuity. The treaty has been called Estonia’s birth certificate\, and had pioneering significance in international law\, in that it cited the concept of a people’s right to self-determination\, to decide their own destiny.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSo today we celebrate the freedom and self-determination that Estonia has\, and which Ukraine is fighting so hard to keep. Let us celebrate this day whole-heartedly\, with joy and with pride in our freedom\, community\, and identity. Even under the shadow of Russia’s continuing war on Ukraine\, it is important to make space in our hearts to celebrate Estonia for all that it has accomplished\, what it continues to achieve\, and for its strong international voice in these disruptive and disturbing times.  \n\n\n\nIt is certainly troubling that the war in Ukraine continues\, and we are right to be uneasy about current events\, both in Europe and here in the U.S. We urge you to channel these thoughts into inspiration for action. We encourage you to use the privilege we have as Estonian Americans – that of using our voices and participating in the democratic process. Across the US\, a record number of Estonian Americans participated in advocacy activities during the year following Russia’s invasion\, speaking out for Ukraine and for Baltic security interests.  It is of utmost importance to continue these efforts in the coming year. So much is at stake in the U.S. Congress and in the understanding of the American people.  \n\n\n\nAs Estonians we are especially aware of the stakes. As has often been said of Baltic Americans: “They know.”  We know. And we remember. This year we commemorate 80 years since the Mass Flight of 1944\, when so many fled Estonia to escape the invading Soviet forces. Our parents and grandparents were faced with the impossible choice\, they experienced the life-altering disruption – whether they fled or were left to face the brutal Soviet regime. Our families were shattered. So many years later\, eight decades later\, even as Estonia has blossomed in regained freedom\, we as a people are still putting together the pieces of family and memory to fill in the gaps of our history.  \n\n\n\nIn Estonia\, the Mass Flight of 1944 is only very recently entering the public dialogue and national consciousness in a more open way. For many younger descendants of Estonians abroad\, the story of how and why our communities developed at the same time also remains largely unknown\, or only vaguely recalled. \n\n\n\nTo help keep the conversation going\, EANC is proud to be part of a larger commemorative project that we can all support together. A memorial sculpture and place of remembrance has been commissioned in Estonia to create a permanent reminder of the Mass Flight. This graceful and symbolic sculpture will depict the last moment of the countless goodbyes\, the last touch of hands at departure\, a moment encompassing uncertainty about the future\, no matter if you left or stayed. To be sited on grounds beside the Pärnu River\, one of the areas from which thousands fled in small boats\, this memorial sculpture is scheduled to be unveiled on September 21\, 2024.  We hope this date will be a focus for Estonians worldwide to remember and to commemorate these terrible events\, each in their own way.  \n\n\n\nAs Estonian Americans we have the privilege and responsibility to connect future generations to this story. We who have ourselves experienced or have a family legacy of the experience of brokenness\, recognize the gift of this inheritance – our story — as we celebrate EV106 and commemorate the Mass Flight of 1944. \n\n\n\nWe at the Estonian American National Council urge you to celebrate the day and share the gift.   \n\n\n\nElagu Eesti! \n\n\n\nMai-Liis Bartling \n\n\n\npresident \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nEesti Rahvuskomitee Ühendriikides tervitus Eesti Vabariigi 106. aastapäeva puhul \n\n\n\nKallid sõbrad! Me teame. Ja me mäletame. Tänavu tähistame 80. aasta möödumist 1944. a. suurpõgenemisest\, kui nii paljud põgenesid Eestist pealetungivate Nõukogude vägede eest. Meie vanemad ja vanavanemad seisid võimatu valiku ees\, tehes elumuutva otsuse – kas põge-neda või jääda silmitsi jõhkra nõukogude korraga. Meie pered purunesid. \n\n\n\nElagu Eesti! \n\n\n\nEesti Vabariigi 106. aastapäeva puhul \n\n\n\nMai-Liis Bartling \n\n\n\nERKÜ president

SUMMARY:Tallinn Digital Summit 2022
DESCRIPTION:The Tallinn Digital Summit\, an annual event hosted by the Estonian Prime Minister\, will take place in Tallinn on 10–11 October. This year’s Summit will focus on delivering trusted connectivity through trusted partnerships. \n\n\n\nThe Tallinn Digital Summit 2022 will take place on 10–11 October at the Tallinn Creative Hub. The two days consist of keynote speeches and panel discussions. While the event is conducted live in Tallinn\, virtual sessions are also accessible. Register here. \n\n\n\nConnectivity is at the heart of our efforts to build a free\, prosperous\, and sustainable future that reinforces the rules-based international order. \n\n\n\nThe Tallinn Digital Summit is an annual event hosted by the Estonian Prime Minister that brings together leaders from like-minded and digitally-advanced countries\, international organizations\, and the private sector to address the most pressing issues as well as to seize the many opportunities on our road toward a connected digital future. \n\n\n\nConnectivity is instrumental to ensuring geopolitical stability\, economic and energy security\, and a successful digital and green transformation. It is now a geostrategic imperative to do business with trusted partners according to our common interests\, our democratic values\, and our highest standards—the essence of trusted connectivity. \n\n\n\nThese themes underline this year’s Tallinn Digital Summit\, an annual event hosted by the Estonian Prime Minister that gathers together leaders of like-minded and digitally-advanced countries\, international organizations\, and the private sector to address the most pressing issues on our road toward a connected digital future. \n\n\n\nTallinn Digital Summit 2021 focused on Trusted Connectivity as a shared conceptual framework for like-minded democracies to consolidate and amplify their several connectivity initiatives while also highlighting the nexus between cross-border infrastructure\, geopolitics\, and digital technologies. \n\n\n\nThis year’s Summit will focus on delivering trusted connectivity through trusted partnerships. The Summit will elaborate on what a trusted and secure digital society could look like\, as well as on concrete steps for governments\, financial institutions\, international organizations\, technical experts\, and the private sector to take to ensure our digital future advances human freedom\, human dignity\, and the rules-based international order. \n\n\n\nWe will explore the role of trusted connectivity and trusted partnerships in ensuring global stability and the resilience of supply chains\, in enhancing energy\, economic\, and cyber security\, in cooperation on digital policy and international standards\, in the development and deployment of artificial intelligence\, clouds and satellites\, digital public goods\, and Web 3.0\, as well as in the reconstruction of a free and democratic Ukraine. All this necessitates the holistic shaping of the requisite political\, institutional\, and entrepreneurial ecosystems to increase public and private investments in infrastructure and utilizing the concept of trusted connectivity to construct an architecture of trust within the rules-based international system. \n\n\n\nThe Summit takes place against the backdrop of several momentous developments. First\, many have recently introduced new connectivity initiatives\, including the G7\, the EU’s Global Gateway\, the UK’s Clean Green Initiative\, and the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity. Second\, Russia’s aggression against Ukraine\, in conjunction with continuing cyberattacks against vital infrastructure\, have amply underscored the geopolitical importance of values-based investments into trusted connectivity and of reducing our strategic dependencies on malign actors. We are faced with new geostrategic imperatives but also with an auspicious opportunity to enhance our cooperation in the face of shared challenges. \n\n\n\n\nRegister for more info

SUMMARY:Atlantic Council: A Conversation on the US role in the NATO Alliance
DESCRIPTION:What is the United States’ role in the alliance and how can NATO members continue to support Ukraine? United States Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Thom Tillis discuss. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeaturing: \n\n\n\n The Hon. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH)Co-Chair\, Senate NATO Observer GroupUS SenateThe Hon. Thom Tillis (R-NC)Co-Chair\, Senate NATO Observer GroupUS Senate \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Join the Atlantic Council’s Transatlantic Security Initiative\, in the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security\, on Monday\, September 26 at 2:00 p.m. for a conversation with Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) . This conversation will be held virtually via Zoom. The war in Ukraine has ushered in a sea change in transatlantic security. In response to Russia’s illegal and unprovoked war\, the United States and its NATO allies have provided unprecedented military and political support to Ukraine in its fight for freedom\, increased the alliance’s deterrence and defense posture especially along its Eastern Flank\, and remained steadfast in maintaining an “open door policy” for prospective new members such as Sweden and Finland. Still\, as Russia’s war in Ukraine shifts into a new phase and NATO contemplates how to adapt in a changed security environment\, it is imperative that the transatlantic community explores what is next for the Alliance and the United States specifically. The Atlantic Council is excited to welcome Senators Shaheen and Tillis to discuss what long-term support the United States and its allies can offer to Ukraine and its people\, how to strengthen Western resolve and unity through the upcoming winter\, and how to bolster collective defense to resist expanding Russian aggression\, including in critical regions such as the Black Sea.The Scowcroft Center’s Transatlantic Security Initiative is pleased to present this live event as part of the Atlantic Council’s #ACFrontPage event series\, our premier ideas platform spotlighting global leaders and championing constructive solutions to global challenges. The Transatlantic Security Initiative shapes and influences the debate on the greatest security challenges facing the North Atlantic Alliance and its key partners.\n\n\n\n\nRegister here

DESCRIPTION:A Virtual Event hosted by the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA) \n\n\n\nIf you missed the venet\, please use the link below to access the video recording. \n\n\n\n\nWatch the video \n\n\n\n\nOver the last years\, the Russian government has invested in developing increasingly sophisticated cyber tools. At the same time\, Russia is now a haven for criminal cyber groups\, which at times seem to work in concert with state entities. As Russian aggression against Ukraine escalates\, cyber operations are already playing a key role in Moscow’s assault on Ukraine. Preparing for an effective response to Kremlin-backed cyber operations is a critical challenge to transatlantic cohesion as Europe and the United States work to prepare a united stance.  \n\n\n\nIntroduction:  \n\n\n\nDr. Alina Polyakova\, President and CEO\, Center for European Policy Analysis  \n\n\n\nSpeakers:  \n\n\n\nChris Krebs\, Partner\, Krebs Stamos Group; Former  Director\, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency\, U.S. Department of Homeland Security \n\n\n\nPresident Toomas Hendrik Ilves\, Distinguished  Fellow\, Center for European Policy Analysis; Former President\, Republic of Estonia \n\n\n\nNicole Perlroth\, Cybersecurity Journalist; Author\, This Is How They Tell Me The World Ends \n\n\n\nModerated by:  \n\n\n\nMaggie Miller\, Cybersecurity Reporter\, Politico

Russia’s continued election meddling\, border revisionism\, and continued provocations against Central and Eastern European NATO members widen the lens of this crisis\, especially as Russian demands have included a wide-reaching restructuring of Europe’s post-Cold War security system. In response\, European capitals from Tallinn to London have been in a flurry of policy debates and actions\, including negotiations\, arms shipments\, and sanctions coordination to push back against Russian aggression. As this crisis unfolds\, Europe’s policymakers and legislators will play an important role in approving and institutionalizing European states’ efforts to counter Russia’s aggression. To discuss what actions Europe can take in the face of the escalating crisis\, the Europe Center is proud to host legislators and parliamentarians from across Europe’s national parliaments and the European Parliament to discuss their perspectives of the crisis and what role European countries and European institutions must play in resolving it. This discussion will take place on Zoom and will be broadcast on YouTube\, Twitter\, and Facebook To receive the event information\, please register using the button below. SUMMARY:Enhancing NATO's Collective Deterrence: A Conversation with Former Supreme Allied Commanders Europe
DESCRIPTION:The Atlantic Council’s Transatlantic Security Initiative\, part of the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security\, and the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center host the public event on Enhancing NATO’s collective Deterrence on Friday\, January 28th from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. ET via Zoom. Featuring two former Supreme Allied Commanders Europe\, this conversation will examine opportunities for NATO to improve its collective defense posture as Russia continues threatening to up-end the security order in Europe over increased aggression towards Ukraine. \n\n\n\nAs the Moscow-generated crisis in eastern Europe unfolds\, it has become clear that the Kremlin hopes to leverage the crisis to renegotiate the architecture of Atlantic security on terms favorable to Russia and is willing to escalate militarily against Ukraine in order to achieve these goals. In response to Russia’s troop build-up\, NATO has strengthened certain aspects of its defense and deterrence posture\, including increasing the readiness of certain units and adding naval assets and aircraft to NATO missions. Yet to further respond to and prepare for Russian escalation in Ukraine\, there is more NATO could do militarily to strengthen defense and deterrence. \n\n\n\nTo discuss NATO’s military role in maintaining collective security in the Euro-Atlantic area and potential options for strengthening NATO’s posture and readiness to respond to Russian escalation or a potential new invasion\, the Atlantic Council is honored to be joined by two former SACEURs\, General Philip M. Breedlove\, USAF (Ret.) and General Wesley K. Clark\, USA (Ret.). General Breedlove and General Clark will discuss what options are available to the Alliance and the United States to stand up to Kremlin aggression and ensure the security of our allies. \n\n\n\nRegister for what promises to be an engaging event on a critical topic for the Alliance. Join the conversation on Twitter with #StrongerWithAllies as we consider how NATO can face this critical challenge. \n\n\n\n\nRegister here\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nFeaturing a discussion with:General Philip M.
