SUMMARY:“The Perfect Allies”: Examining the US-Baltic Relationship Under the Trump Administration
DESCRIPTION:Watch video recording here\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDespite public statements promising increased support for Ukraine against Russia and a restoration of European hard power\, many of the United States’ major allies still miss the North Atlantic Treaty Organization military spending benchmark of 2 percent of gross domestic product. Since his first term\, President Donald Trump has castigated these nations and their leaders for “freeloading” on American defense spending. \n\n\n\nBut the Baltic states\, which face the greatest threat from Russian aggression\, have consistently held up their end of the bargain\, providing an outsized amount of support for Ukraine and maintaining their military strength despite their relatively small economies. \n\n\n\nWith global threats to freedom on the rise and America’s security commitments growing uncertain\, join Luke Coffey and a panel of Baltic security experts for a discussion on the future of US-Baltic relations in the second Trump administration. \n\n\n\nOrganized by The Hudson Institute. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmb. Kalev Stoicescu \n\n\n\nChairman of the National Defence Committee\, Estonian Parliament \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmb Eitvydas Bajarūnas \n\n\n\nVisiting Fellow\, Center for European Policy Analysis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOlevs Nikers \n\n\n\nPresident\, Baltic Security Foundation \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLuke Coffey \n\n\n\nSenior Fellow\, Center on Europe and Eurasia \n\n\n\n\nEvent website\n\n\n\n\nInquiries: tmagnuson@hudson.org

SUMMARY:85th Anniversary of the Welles Declaration
DESCRIPTION:Comemorative event location and time to be announced shortly. \n\n\n\nJuly 23rd will mark the 85th anniversary of the impactful Welles Declaration\, which doutlined the United States policy of non-recognition of the Soviet takeover of the three Baltic countries. That year\, the statement of the Acting United States Secretary of State Sumner Welles declared the occupation of the Baltic states by the Soviet Union illegal. This position\, known as the Welles Declaration\, became the basis for the U.S. policy of non-recognition of the annexation of the Baltic states. \n\n\n\nWe must continue to standing firmly for the sovereign self-determination of countries and the principles of international law\, a conviction that is very relevant today\, especially as we see Russia’s invasion and aggression against Ukraine and are witness to the illegal annexation of Ukrainian territories. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Welles Declaration set a world-wide standard of non-recognition of the Baltic incorporation into the Soviet Union and helped Estonia\, Latvia\, Lithuania to preserve the continuity of state and to eventually restore their independence. \n\n\n\nDue to the non-recognition of the occupation\, diplomats of the Baltic countries were able to continue the work of their missions. \n\n\n\nThe Welles Declaration was largely inspired and drafted by Loy W. Henderson\, who had visited Latvia as a Red Cross volunteer in 1919\, and later on as a U.S. diplomat. The idea for a declaration was fully supported by Sumner Welles\, who in 1940 served as Under Secretary of State.
