SUMMARY:NY Baltic Film Festival 2024
DESCRIPTION:The Seventh Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America\, returns this November 6-17 @ Scandinavia House NYC\, and with virtual screenings across the U.S. \n\n\n\n\nPurchase tickets here \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe 7th Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America is back November 6-17\, 2024\, with a mix of in-person and virtual screenings of the best new films from the Baltic region. From November 6-10\, festival-goers can enjoy screenings and events at Scandinavia House in New York. For those across the U.S.\, virtual screenings of six of the films will be available to viewers from November 9–17. Screenings will be accompanied by a range of in-person film talks with directors\, producers and actors; details will be released in the coming weeks. All in-person evenings will be followed by receptions. The full fall program lineup has now been announced. The festival kicks off on Wednesday\, November 6 at 6:30 PM with the U.S. premiere of Life and Love (dir. Helen Takkin\, Estonia\, 2024). Set during the Great Depression in 1933\, this compelling drama follows Irma\, a young woman who leaves her rural home to pursue a writing career in the city. There\, she is pulled into a toxic relationship with her boss at a local print shop\, and as political tensions rise\, Irma realizes that love and ambition come at a steep cost. On Thursday\, November 7 at 7 PM\, the documentary The Mammoth Hunt revisits 1968 Lithuania\, where theater director Jonas Jurasas directs a popular and thinly veiled anti-Soviet production titled “The Mammoth Hunt.” When word gets back to Moscow\, he flees to the U.S.\, while the play’s cast stages a final act of defiance. Director Aistė Stonytė tracks down recollections from its surviving participants. Screenings on Friday\, November 8 include the North American Premiere of A Postcard From Rome (dir. Elza Gauja\, Latvia\, 2024) at 6 PM. In this gentle love story\, Latvian couple Ernests and Alvīne use a lottery scheme to fulfill their lifelong dream of traveling to Rome. As they embark on their holiday\, it becomes clear that Alvīne’s Alzheimer’s disease is rapidly progressing. At 8:15 PM\, director Marko Raat‘s 8 Views of Lake Biwa\, Estonia’s contender for Best International Feature at this year’s Academy Awards\, is a poetic fairy tale set in an Estonian fishing village. In the wake of a recent tragedy\, two teenage girls watch ships sail to Kyoto\, while villagers create erotic art and engage in spiritual spells; hailed as “one of the most unique films of the year” (Cineuropa).Saturday\, November 9 begins with a re-screening of Life and Love at 12 PM. At 3 PM\, a program of Baltic Shorts will screen six short films\, with two from each of the Baltic countries including live-action\, animation and stop motion\, including Ootid (U.S. Premiere); On Weary Wings Go By (NY Premiere); The One Who Knows (U.S. Premiere); and others. Making its North American Premiere at 5 PM\, Maria’s Silence (dir. Davis Simanis\, Latvia\, 2024) is a powerful historical drama about Maria Leiko\, a famous silent-film actress forced to abandon her career to join Skatuve\, the Latvian State Theater in Moscow\, where she was manipulated amid purges of political enemies; a film “rich in historical references and complex visual poeticism” (Cineuropa). At 7:30 PM\, director Saulė Bliuvaitė‘s gritty coming-of-age drama Toxic makes its New York Premiere. Dreaming of escape from the bleakness of their rural Lithuanian hometown\, two young teens form a unique bond at a modeling school\, where they are pushed to violate their bodies in increasingly extreme ways; “impressively tough-minded…with glimmers of tenderness and humor (Variety) and “gritty and keenly observed” (Screendaily). Sunday screenings begin at 2 PM with Parade (Paradas\, dir. Titas Laucius\, Lithuania\, 2022)\, a Baltic comedy following a former couple’s decision to finalize their divorce through Catholic Court — with unexpected consequences; “a cracking comedy” (Screen International). At 4:15 PM\, the Estonian documentary Kelly — Someone Else’s Dream explores the dark side of competitive sports with the story of freestyle skier Kelly Sildaru\, who shot to fame as an X-Games gold medalist at the age of 13 but was later revealed to have been abused; “an uplifting message of hope and empowerment” (Cineuropa). The in-person portion of the festival wraps up at 7 PM with the NYC premiere of Flow (dir. Gints Zilbalodis\, Latvia/France/Belgium\, 2024). This visually stunning animated adventure follows a brave cat who\, after a devastating flood\, teams up with a capybara\, lemur\, bird\, and dog to survive. Praised as “one of the most moving animated films in recent memory” (IndieWire) and “a joy to experience…a deeply affecting story” (THR)\, Flow is Latvia’s official entry for Best Animated Feature at the 97th Academy Awards. For program updates\, please subscribe to the festival newsletter at balticfilmfestival.com and Scandinavia House newsletter at scandinaviahouse.org. SUMMARY:A Conversation with Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis ahead of the Washington Summit
DESCRIPTION:Tune in to hear Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis as he sits down with Senior Fellow Peter Rough on the eve of the Washington summit to discuss the prospects for Ukraine and the outlook for Lithuanian security. He will be introduced by Hudson Visiting Fellow Tomas Janeliūnas of Vilnius University. \n\n\n\nWatch live: A Conversation with Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis ahead of the Washington Summit | Hudson Institute \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Gabrielus Landsbergis\, Foreign Minister of Lithuania \n\n\n\nUpon taking office as foreign minister of Lithuania in December 2020\, Gabrielius Landsbergis quickly made a name for himself as one of Europe’s most effective diplomats. Early in his term\, he announced that Lithuania would no longer participate in the Cooperation between China and Central and Eastern European Countries (China-CEEC) format; Estonia and Latvia withdrew the following year. Moreover\, since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine\, Landsbergis has outspokenly defended Ukrainian sovereignty and denounced Russia’s occupation. In fact\, his clarity on the threat Russia poses goes back years. As he put it in June 2024\, “I’m Lithuanian\, and we strongly disapproved of Russian imperialism before it was common to do so.” \n\n\n\nFurthermore\, Foreign Minister Landsbergis has time and again made the case for the transatlantic alliance and underscored the importance of a strong American presence in Europe. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPeter Rough\, Senior Fellow and Director of the Center on Europe and Eurasia at Hudson Institute. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTomas Janeliūnas\, Visiting Fellow in the Center on Europe and Eurasia at Hudson Institute. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nInquiries: msnow@hudson.org

SUMMARY:AABS Conference 2024
DESCRIPTION:The 29th Biennial AABS Conference – The Baltic Way: Unity and Giving Aid\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDaily Schedule\n\n\n\n\nEstonia\, Latvia\, and Lithuania have for over the past century shown the benefits of shared action and solidarity. The three states sought recognition of their independence following World War I\, and following World War II – through the years of Soviet occupation – they maintained that recognition through collaborative efforts. In recent decades the joint efforts of their peoples were seen in the peaceful Baltic Way demonstration in August 1989 when Balts joined hands from Tallinn to Vilnius across a distance of 600 kilometers\, and in the three countries’ together joining NATO in 2004. Today\, the three Baltic countries are leading the world in per capita aid to Ukraine after Russia’s invasion in February 2022.  \n\n\n\nGathering at the 29th biennial conference of the Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies (AABS)\, to be held on the campus of Yale University on June 13-16\, 2024\, will be hundreds of people dedicated to the study of the peoples and lands around the Baltic Sea. The conference features panels from all fields of the humanities and social sciences\, education\, technology\, transnational security\, safety\, and well-being. The conference draws attention to the larger shared space throughout the Baltic Sea region as well as to the role the peoples of the Baltic are playing on an all-European and global scale. The conference\, held on location\, is co-hosted by Yale University and the University of New Haven. \n\n\n\nEANC is a proud sponsor of this impactful conference. \n\n\n\n\nProgram overview \n\n\n\nProgram Schedule by Day

SUMMARY:Baltic Advocacy Days
DESCRIPTION:This event organized by JBANC is a timely opportunity for Baltic Americans and their friends to come together and engage with Congress about the security and economic issues impacting the United States’ relationship with the Baltic states. As a constituent\, you have enormous power to shine a light on these very important issues in today’s reality of a horrific and unjustified war that the Russian Federation is waging against the Ukrainian people. All this happening threateningly close to the Baltics.  \n\n\n\nFor the second year in a row\, Baltic Advocacy Days will be held virtually\, spanning the week of May 2-6\, 2022. All meetings will be scheduled during regular business hours (EST time). \n\n\n\nDue to the uncertainties that the Covid-19 pandemic has introduced to our social lives\, we have chosen to take this approach\, which also opens up participation to anyone with a smart device and stable internet connection from around the country. With Congress slowly opening back up\, there might be some opportunities to also organize in-person meetings if possible. As of this time\, we don’t know the timetable for a reopening.  \n\n\n\nNo prior experience is needed to participate as a Baltic advocate. \n\n\n\nJBANC will issue a one-pager and brief you on the priorities that we plan to raise. We will also provide a voluntary training opportunity for everyone involved\, as well as assign you with a team of other constituents and/or JBANC team members. All these activities will serve as support mechanisms in your preparation process. If you are interested in leading a group or reaching out to any of the offices\, we could also provide you with useful information about this process. If not\, you are welcome to play a background role during these meetings\, which is just as important. Strength in numbers can be an advantage! \n\n\n\nBy filling out the registration form we assume you are making a commitment to participate in at least one meeting with a Congressional office as a constituent. Each meeting typically lasts around 15-30 minutes.  \n\n\n\nWhile we understand that schedules might change\, it’s important that you make every effort to participate once you have made this commitment. The virtual format gives us all a little wiggle room when scheduling these meetings. \n\n\n\n\nRegister here

SUMMARY:Atlantic Council Forum: ´Trusted Connectivity: Securing Digital Infrastructure´ featuring the Prime Minister of Estonia
DESCRIPTION:  \nFollowing consensus at the G7 Leaders’ Summit on countering China’s Belt and Road Initiative\, and ahead of the Tallinn Digital Summit this September\, Prime Minister of Estonia H.E. Kaja Kallas will join the Atlantic Council to discuss how the United States\, European nations\, and their respective industries should collaborate through policy\, law\, and market forces to build trusted connectivity into their emerging digital and physical infrastructure\, using the Three Seas Initiative as a foundational example. \n \n  \nPlease join the Atlantic Council for the second event in the forum “Trusted Connectivity: Securing Digital Infrastructure in an Era of Strategic Com \npetition with China\,” featuring the Prime Minister of Estonia H.E. Kaja Kallas. This event\, co-hosted by the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security and its Forward Defense practice area\, the Digital Forensic Research Lab\, the Europe Center\, the GeoEconomics Center\, and the GeoTech Center\, will take place on Wednesday\, July 14\, 2021\, from  2:00 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.  EDT via Zoom. To receive the Zoom link\, please register by clicking the REGISTER button above.  \nIn an era defined by both revolutionary technological advancements and accelerating geopolitical competition\, modernizing global infrastructure is not only a profound economic opportunity but also a key security imperative. The Atlantic COuncil´s June 2021 #ACFrontPage event\, featuring President of Estonia H.E. Kersti Kaljulaid and US Deputy National Security Advisor for Cyber and Emerging Technology Anne Neuberger\, introduced the concept of “trusted connectivity” as a strategic framework for democratic nations to incentivize ambitious and interconnected infrastructure projects among the private sector\, and to provide a viable alternative to authoritarian efforts like China’s exploitative Belt and Road Initiative. Yet there remain significant hurdles to implementing this framework. Technological and legal standards\, industries and the products they develop\, and visions for the future of economic vitality\, societal resilience\, and national security are not aligned among many democratic nations. If trusted connectivity is to serve as a key pillar alongside existing US and allied initiatives like Build Back Better World\, the Blue Dot Network\, and the US Innovation and Competition Act\, the United States and its allies and partners need to overcome these obstacles along the path to trusted global infrastructure. \nIn advance of the Tallinn Digital Summit this September\, Prime Minister of Estonia H.E. \nWe hope you can join us for what promises to be an important and timely discussion.  \nTo receive the virtual Zoom link\, please register by clicking the Register Now button below. \n

SUMMARY:Advocate for Baltic Security: Stop the NordStream 2 Pipeline
DESCRIPTION:Dear Estonian society and community leaders – \n \nPlease consider sharing with your communities this call to action to contact Members of Congress regarding this week’s announcement from the White House that certain parties engaged in the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline would be exempt from sanctions that Congress passed into law last year.  EANC and its sister organizations in the Central and East European Coalition have sent a letter to President Biden expressing our concern over the decision\, as we feel waiving these sanctions is a grave mistake. Completion of the pipeline poses many dangers to the security of central and east Europe\, and this to Estonia\, Latvia and Lithuania. We are inviting our constituents to engage with Congress and the White House to ask for reconsideration of this decision.  Below is suggested text to use in forwarding this request to your friends\, colleagues and community members:\n  \n\n\n\nDear Friends of Estonia\,\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe recent report issued by the Biden Administration regarding waivers for NordStream2 entities and individuals has drawn major attention from friends of Estonia on Capitol Hill.  In particular\, the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Sens. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Jim Risch (R-ID)\, respectively and other bipartisan Senators have issued statements strongly urging the Administration to reconsider its decision regarding the waivers.  The above-mentioned statements are available at https://www.foreign.senate.gov/press/chair/release/chairman-menendez-statement-on-state-departments-nord-stream-2-report- and https://www.foreign.senate.gov/press/ranking/release/risch-biden-and-blinken-are-handing-putin-a-gift-with-ns2-waivers \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nTo further raise the profile of the Nord Stream2 pipeline sanctions\, the Estonian American National Council invites you to contact your elected officials (Senators and Representatives) and request they issue statements or contact the Administration expressing their disapproval of the waivers.  Feel free to use the Action Item and sample letter here for your convenience.  Your communication with your elected officials will denote the importance and urgency to stop the completion of the political pipeline.\n\n \n\n\nEANC thanks you for your support of our advocacy efforts to help ensure security in the Baltic region and beyond!

Such Russian campaigns will likely continue in the foreseeable future.\nWhat countermeasures could be applied to challenge this type of foreign influence? Tune in today:\n \nSpeakers:\nDr. Kati Parppei – Academy Research Fellow\, Docent (Russian History) Department of Geographical and Historical Studies University of Eastern Finland.\nDr. Ivo Juurvee – The Head of Security & Resilience Program at the International Centre for Defence and Security (Tallinn\, Estonia).\nModerator: Olga Dragiļeva (Latvia)\n \nGet your questions and comments ready for the livestream!
