SUMMARY:Atlantic Council Forum: ´Trusted Connectivity: Securing Digital Infrastructure´ featuring the Prime Minister of Estonia
DESCRIPTION:  \nFollowing consensus at the G7 Leaders’ Summit on countering China’s Belt and Road Initiative\, and ahead of the Tallinn Digital Summit this September\, Prime Minister of Estonia H.E. Kaja Kallas will join the Atlantic Council to discuss how the United States\, European nations\, and their respective industries should collaborate through policy\, law\, and market forces to build trusted connectivity into their emerging digital and physical infrastructure\, using the Three Seas Initiative as a foundational example. \n \n  \nPlease join the Atlantic Council for the second event in the forum “Trusted Connectivity: Securing Digital Infrastructure in an Era of Strategic Com \npetition with China\,” featuring the Prime Minister of Estonia H.E. Kaja Kallas. This event\, co-hosted by the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security and its Forward Defense practice area\, the Digital Forensic Research Lab\, the Europe Center\, the GeoEconomics Center\, and the GeoTech Center\, will take place on Wednesday\, July 14\, 2021\, from  2:00 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.  EDT via Zoom. To receive the Zoom link\, please register by clicking the REGISTER button above.  \nIn an era defined by both revolutionary technological advancements and accelerating geopolitical competition\, modernizing global infrastructure is not only a profound economic opportunity but also a key security imperative. The Atlantic COuncil´s June 2021 #ACFrontPage event\, featuring President of Estonia H.E. Kersti Kaljulaid and US Deputy National Security Advisor for Cyber and Emerging Technology Anne Neuberger\, introduced the concept of “trusted connectivity” as a strategic framework for democratic nations to incentivize ambitious and interconnected infrastructure projects among the private sector\, and to provide a viable alternative to authoritarian efforts like China’s exploitative Belt and Road Initiative. Yet there remain significant hurdles to implementing this framework. Technological and legal standards\, industries and the products they develop\, and visions for the future of economic vitality\, societal resilience\, and national security are not aligned among many democratic nations. If trusted connectivity is to serve as a key pillar alongside existing US and allied initiatives like Build Back Better World\, the Blue Dot Network\, and the US Innovation and Competition Act\, the United States and its allies and partners need to overcome these obstacles along the path to trusted global infrastructure. \nIn advance of the Tallinn Digital Summit this September\, Prime Minister of Estonia H.E. \nWe hope you can join us for what promises to be an important and timely discussion.  \nTo receive the virtual Zoom link\, please register by clicking the Register Now button below. \n

SUMMARY:Enhancing NATO's Collective Deterrence: A Conversation with Former Supreme Allied Commanders Europe
DESCRIPTION:The Atlantic Council’s Transatlantic Security Initiative\, part of the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security\, and the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center host the public event on Enhancing NATO’s collective Deterrence on Friday\, January 28th from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. ET via Zoom. Featuring two former Supreme Allied Commanders Europe\, this conversation will examine opportunities for NATO to improve its collective defense posture as Russia continues threatening to up-end the security order in Europe over increased aggression towards Ukraine. \n\n\n\nAs the Moscow-generated crisis in eastern Europe unfolds\, it has become clear that the Kremlin hopes to leverage the crisis to renegotiate the architecture of Atlantic security on terms favorable to Russia and is willing to escalate militarily against Ukraine in order to achieve these goals. In response to Russia’s troop build-up\, NATO has strengthened certain aspects of its defense and deterrence posture\, including increasing the readiness of certain units and adding naval assets and aircraft to NATO missions. Yet to further respond to and prepare for Russian escalation in Ukraine\, there is more NATO could do militarily to strengthen defense and deterrence. \n\n\n\nTo discuss NATO’s military role in maintaining collective security in the Euro-Atlantic area and potential options for strengthening NATO’s posture and readiness to respond to Russian escalation or a potential new invasion\, the Atlantic Council is honored to be joined by two former SACEURs\, General Philip M. Breedlove\, USAF (Ret.) and General Wesley K. Clark\, USA (Ret.). General Breedlove and General Clark will discuss what options are available to the Alliance and the United States to stand up to Kremlin aggression and ensure the security of our allies. \n\n\n\nRegister for what promises to be an engaging event on a critical topic for the Alliance. Join the conversation on Twitter with #StrongerWithAllies as we consider how NATO can face this critical challenge. \n\n\n\n\nRegister here\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nFeaturing a discussion with:General Philip M. SUMMARY:Tallinn Digital Summit 2022
DESCRIPTION:The Tallinn Digital Summit\, an annual event hosted by the Estonian Prime Minister\, will take place in Tallinn on 10–11 October. This year’s Summit will focus on delivering trusted connectivity through trusted partnerships. \n\n\n\nThe Tallinn Digital Summit 2022 will take place on 10–11 October at the Tallinn Creative Hub. The two days consist of keynote speeches and panel discussions. While the event is conducted live in Tallinn\, virtual sessions are also accessible. Register here. \n\n\n\nConnectivity is at the heart of our efforts to build a free\, prosperous\, and sustainable future that reinforces the rules-based international order. \n\n\n\nThe Tallinn Digital Summit is an annual event hosted by the Estonian Prime Minister that brings together leaders from like-minded and digitally-advanced countries\, international organizations\, and the private sector to address the most pressing issues as well as to seize the many opportunities on our road toward a connected digital future. \n\n\n\nConnectivity is instrumental to ensuring geopolitical stability\, economic and energy security\, and a successful digital and green transformation. It is now a geostrategic imperative to do business with trusted partners according to our common interests\, our democratic values\, and our highest standards—the essence of trusted connectivity. \n\n\n\nThese themes underline this year’s Tallinn Digital Summit\, an annual event hosted by the Estonian Prime Minister that gathers together leaders of like-minded and digitally-advanced countries\, international organizations\, and the private sector to address the most pressing issues on our road toward a connected digital future. \n\n\n\nTallinn Digital Summit 2021 focused on Trusted Connectivity as a shared conceptual framework for like-minded democracies to consolidate and amplify their several connectivity initiatives while also highlighting the nexus between cross-border infrastructure\, geopolitics\, and digital technologies. \n\n\n\nThis year’s Summit will focus on delivering trusted connectivity through trusted partnerships. The Summit will elaborate on what a trusted and secure digital society could look like\, as well as on concrete steps for governments\, financial institutions\, international organizations\, technical experts\, and the private sector to take to ensure our digital future advances human freedom\, human dignity\, and the rules-based international order. \n\n\n\nWe will explore the role of trusted connectivity and trusted partnerships in ensuring global stability and the resilience of supply chains\, in enhancing energy\, economic\, and cyber security\, in cooperation on digital policy and international standards\, in the development and deployment of artificial intelligence\, clouds and satellites\, digital public goods\, and Web 3.0\, as well as in the reconstruction of a free and democratic Ukraine. All this necessitates the holistic shaping of the requisite political\, institutional\, and entrepreneurial ecosystems to increase public and private investments in infrastructure and utilizing the concept of trusted connectivity to construct an architecture of trust within the rules-based international system. \n\n\n\nThe Summit takes place against the backdrop of several momentous developments. First\, many have recently introduced new connectivity initiatives\, including the G7\, the EU’s Global Gateway\, the UK’s Clean Green Initiative\, and the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity. Second\, Russia’s aggression against Ukraine\, in conjunction with continuing cyberattacks against vital infrastructure\, have amply underscored the geopolitical importance of values-based investments into trusted connectivity and of reducing our strategic dependencies on malign actors. We are faced with new geostrategic imperatives but also with an auspicious opportunity to enhance our cooperation in the face of shared challenges. \n\n\n\n\nRegister for more info

SUMMARY:Online event: The Legacy of Juri Lotman in Tartu\, Estonia and the World
DESCRIPTION:This online program hosted by the New York Public Library will celebrate Tartu\, Estonia as a 2024 European Capital of Culture\, Tartu 2024 including luminaries of worldwide interest like Juri Lotman. The celebration will take us to memorable places in Tartu that are connected to the cultural heritage and legacy of this unique man and his city. \n\n\n\nSpeakers include Merit Maran\, Elen Lotman\, Peeter Torop. Read more about them below. \n\n\n\nPlease register to receive Zoom link to join! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nRegister here \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJuri Lotman (1922-1993) was an internationally renowned intellectual and scholar. Born to Ukrainian Jewish parents in Leningrad\, he escaped the ongoing wave of antisemitism\, culminating in the “Doctors’ Plot”\, by finding refuge in Tartu\, within the safety of ancient walls of its university. Although Estonia was also occupied by the Soviet Union at the time\, the environment was considerably more Western and Lotman didn’t experience hostility to his ethnic background. \n\n\n\nAs his academic career developed at the University of Tartu\, Lotman became the key figure in cultural semiotics. Well loved by his students and internationally respected for his works\, Lotman went beyond the academe to have his own program on the national TV and also wrote extensively on cinema. In the 2020s\, after the celebrations of his centenary\, Lotman’s intellectual legacy is still relevant and exciting – as is his life story. \n\n\n\nSpeakers include Merit Maran\, Elen Lotman\, Peeter Torop. Read more about them below. \n\n\n\nThis online program is a result of cooperation between the New York Public Library and Estonian Writers Union which was mediated by the Tartu 2024 European Capital of Culture Foundation and the Consulate General of Estonia in New York. In 2022\, the Tartu branch of the Estonian Writers Union produced a webcast on Estonian polymath Uku Masing for the World Languages Collection of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library at the NYPL\, with its premiere and online Q&A on April 26\, 2022. That webcast can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z19HnOPox-U. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers include Merit Maran\, Elen Lotman\, Peeter Torop. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKERS\n\n\n\nPeeter Torop\, PhD – Professor of Semiotics of Culture at the University of Tartu. Torop expanded the scope of the semiotic study of translation to include intratextual\, intertextual\, and extratextual translation and stressing the productivity of the notion of translation in general semiotics. He is also a co-editor of the journal Sign Systems Studies\, the oldest international semiotic periodical. As a student of Lotman himself\, Torop shares his memories of Lotman as a teacher and mentor\, ever in search of fresh insights. \n\n\n\nMerit Maran (Rickberg)\, PhD – Head of the Juri Lotman Semiotics Repository at the University of Tallinn. Maran was the main curator of Juri Lotman 100 centenary celebrations in 2022 and defended her PhD thesis\, “Towards Complexity Thinking with Juri Lotman: Modelling Cultural Dynamics in Educational Systems” in 2023. Dr. Maran focuses on the contemporary and ongoing relevance of Lotman’s approach to complexity in cultural systems. \n\n\n\nElen Lotman\, PhD – Associate Professor of Film Arts\, Baltic Film\, Media and Arts School. An award-winning cinematographer\, director and lecturer\, Elen Lotman is a granddaughter of Juri Lotman and has also translated his works on film into Estonian. Sharing a more personal side of her grandfather\, she tells of her childhood full of stories\, fun and discovery\, as well as Juri Lotman’s daily habits and love for Tartu. \n\n\n\nThis webcast has been made possible by the Cultural Endowment of Estonia and the Estonian Ministry of Culture.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll programs are subject to change or cancellation. \n\n\n\nAssistive Listening and ASL \n\n\n\nASL interpretation and real-time (CART) captioning available upon request. SUMMARY:Atlantic Council Talk: Securing the Eastern Flank: A Baltic Agenda for 2024 NATO Summit
DESCRIPTION:In Case You Missed it\, watch the video on our YouTube page or by clicking the button below: \n\n\n\n\nWatch video \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJoin in person or online to attend the Atlantic Council’s Transatlantic Security Initiative\, in the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security\, for a public event exploring the Baltic states’ priorities for the upcoming NATO Summit in Washington\, DC. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSince last year’s Summit in Vilnius\, Lithuania\, the security landscape in NATO’s eastern flank has shifted significantly. New defense plans and strong defense spending\, coupled with the historic accession of Sweden and Finland\, has reorganized the Baltic Sea into a “NATO lake.” Despite this major step forward for regional security\, ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine demands a continued focus on stability. The NATO Summit taking place in Washington\, DC\, presents a pivotal opportunity to solidify allied gains made since last July and send a strong signal to Moscow amid continuing war on the European continent.   \n\n\n\nWith less than five weeks until the Washington Summit\, the Atlantic Council is pleased to welcome the Lithuanian\, Latvian\, and Estonian Permanent Representatives to NATO for a discussion exploring Baltic defense priorities and views on the future of NATO beyond its 75th anniversary. The Permanent Representatives will delve into the collaborative efforts between the US\, the Baltic states\, and other NATO allies as they strengthen efforts to bolster support for Ukraine and collective defense and deterrence on NATO’s eastern flank. \n\n\n\nThis event is part of the Transatlantic Security Initiative’s 2024 NATO Washington Summit campaign. For more information and updates on future events and publications\, follow @ACScowcroft.  This conversation will take place in-person and will be broadcast on YouTube\, X\, Facebook\, and LinkedIn. \n\n\n\nFEATURED SPEAKERSH.E. SUMMARY:A Conversation with Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis ahead of the Washington Summit
DESCRIPTION:Tune in to hear Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis as he sits down with Senior Fellow Peter Rough on the eve of the Washington summit to discuss the prospects for Ukraine and the outlook for Lithuanian security. He will be introduced by Hudson Visiting Fellow Tomas Janeliūnas of Vilnius University. \n\n\n\nWatch live: A Conversation with Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis ahead of the Washington Summit | Hudson Institute \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Gabrielus Landsbergis\, Foreign Minister of Lithuania \n\n\n\nUpon taking office as foreign minister of Lithuania in December 2020\, Gabrielius Landsbergis quickly made a name for himself as one of Europe’s most effective diplomats. Early in his term\, he announced that Lithuania would no longer participate in the Cooperation between China and Central and Eastern European Countries (China-CEEC) format; Estonia and Latvia withdrew the following year. Moreover\, since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine\, Landsbergis has outspokenly defended Ukrainian sovereignty and denounced Russia’s occupation. In fact\, his clarity on the threat Russia poses goes back years. As he put it in June 2024\, “I’m Lithuanian\, and we strongly disapproved of Russian imperialism before it was common to do so.” \n\n\n\nFurthermore\, Foreign Minister Landsbergis has time and again made the case for the transatlantic alliance and underscored the importance of a strong American presence in Europe. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPeter Rough\, Senior Fellow and Director of the Center on Europe and Eurasia at Hudson Institute. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTomas Janeliūnas\, Visiting Fellow in the Center on Europe and Eurasia at Hudson Institute. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nInquiries: msnow@hudson.org
