DESCRIPTION:The American Latvian Youth Association invites members of the Lithuanian and Estonain communities to join them for a ski weekend at Copper Mountain\, Colorado.  \n\n\n\nThe group will be staying in Silverthorne/Dillon\, CO from March 21-23\, with the option to stay through Monday. There will be options for both Epic and Ikon resorts. This event will be open to all ages and families that would like to visit. The plan is to stay in the Silverthorne/Dillion area and ski the surrounding mountains. There are numerous options within the vicinity for both IKON ((APPROXIMATE TIMES)….(Copper Mountain – 15 min\, Winter Park -1hr15) and Epic Pass Holders (Breckenridge – 20 min\, Vail – 35min). \n\n\n\nDillion/Silverthorne are neighboring each other and have a variety of restuarants bars\, etc. There is plenty to do around town\, and everything is accessible off the main road through town and from highway I-70. From the airport\, travel times are around 1hr20 minutes\, depending on weather for that day. Driving/carpooling is the only available method of transport. Shuttles are available and can be found\, prices do vary. Please note: ALJA WILL NOT BE PROVIDING transportation. Talk with friends or respond to this interest form to set up carpooling. \n\n\n\nLodging: \n\n\n\nALJA will not be providing lodging\, once again\, please respond to this inquiry form so we can get an accurate headcount. Depending on how many people show interest\, we can group up in Airbnb’s. If you want to spend the money\, Lodging is absolutely available on the mountains. Prices vary and can be extremely expensive. Hotels are also an option\, but Airbnb’s/Vrbo’s are likely to be the best\, most cost-efficient method of lodging. This will also make transportation and carpooling easier. \n\n\n\nSchedule:\n\n\n\nFriday: Arrival. Check in to most hotels/Airbnb’s is usually around 4pm\, plan accordingly. Friday night @ 8pm\, meet up at a bar or restaurant. TBD based on number of people. \n\n\n\nSaturday: SKI/SNOWBOARD all day. IKON pass members will (likely) ski at Copper Mountain. Meet for lunch 12ish@ Downhill Dukes or Jack’s\, Most lifts close around 330-4. Epic pass members (BOOOO Vail sucks 😀 ) can ski wherever they choose. Après ski afterwards or head back to Airbnb’s. Saturday Night 9pm\, meet up at Elevation Bowling for ALJA social event. Elevation Bowl is walkable from most places in Dillion and has a full bar/food\, all ages allowed. The bowling alley closes 1am(ish) and lanes cost $55/hr. We are hoping ALJA will help cover some of this cost of the bowling lanes. \n\n\n\nSunday: Check out of Airbnb/Head home\, or ski with the locals. If people are interested in staying until Monday\, just indicate that in the form. We can get a group with an Airbnb that is rented until then. The largest group of workers consisted of over 2\,000 Japanese Americans who had been interned during the first years of the Second World War and had been looking for a new place to live. After the war refugees from many countries in Europe came to Sea-brook Farms\, amongst them were some 900 Estonians and 200 Latvians.‍They all had lost their homes and had to start again. Working at Seabrook farms meant seven day weeks with ever changing shifts\, work that was both physically and mentally draining. Amongst all the hardships they still found ways to keep up their cultural traditions and create new possibilities for their children.At the same time jealousy and distrust drove the Seabrook family apart. Instead of creating a future for his sons\, Mr Seabrook took it away from them. \n\n\n\nThe film sheds light on the puzzling history of the Seabrook family and their factory workers; people of different countries and cultural backgrounds who had no other place to go to. \n\n\n\nSeabrooki farmi asutajate perekonna ajalugu meenutab Kreeka tragöödiat. Selles on reetmist\, võimaluste loomist ja hävitamist. Samal ajal jagasid pagulastest ja sisserändajatest Seabrooki töötajad ühist südantlõhestavat lugu. 1950. aastatel oli Seabrooki farm suurim külmutatud toidu töötlemisettevõte Ameerikas. Edukaks toimimiseks tuli kasutada põllumajandus- ja tehase tööjõudu. Suurim tööjõugrupp koosnes üle 2000 Jaapani ameeriklasest\, kes olid teise maailmasõja algusaastatel Ameerikasse intergreerunud. Pärast sõda tulid Seabrooki taludesse tööle pagulased mujaltki\, paljud Euroopast. Nende hulgas oli umbes 900 eestlast ja 200 lätlast. Nad olid kõik kaotanud oma kodud ja pidid oma elu taas nullist üles ehitama hakkama. Töö Seabrooki taludes toimus seitse päeva nädalas\, mis oli nii füüsiliselt kui vaimselt kurnav. Kõigi raskuste keskel leiti siiski viise\, kuidas hoida oma kultuurilisi traditsioone ja luua järeltulijatele uusi võimalusi. Kadedus ja usalduse puudumine aga süvenes ja viis Seabrooki perekonna lõpuks lahku. Selle asemel\, et oma poegadele parem tulevik rajada\, otsustas härr Seabrook hoopis selle neilt röövida. Film heidab valgust Seabrooki perekonna ja nende tehase töötajate mõistatuslikule ajaloole – erinevatest riikidest ja kultuuridest pärit inimestele\, kelle jaoks Seabrooki farm oli ainus lootusekiir. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHelga Merits is a documentary filmmaker with Estonian roots living in Holland. After completing a successful study of philosophy at the University of Amsterdam\, she went on to work as a newspaper and radio journalist in Holland and Belgium. It was during this period that the idea of making documentaries began to grow; image and sound\, as well as words\, were to influence her work from then on. \n\n\n\nHelga Merits: “In the end\, this is what it’s all about: to convey the story and make people enthusiastic\, hopeful and give them inspiration.”  (Eesti Elu\, 21 October 2017)

DESCRIPTION:The “Piruka” Contest is back! \n\n\n\nThe New York Educational Society (NYi Eesti Haridusselts) looks forward to a great turnout for this fantastic event celebrating Estonia´s savory delicacy: the pirukas. A variety of fabulous flavors wil lbe showcased.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nContest rules: \n\n\n\n-Voting will be in two categories: meat and vegetable pirukad. \n\n\n\n-Pirukad must be premade. \n\n\n\n-Preparers should make the pirukad for about 50 people. (The sample pirukad can be cut in half.) \n\n\n\n-Preparers pay no fee. \n\n\n\n-Tasters pay a $10 fee per person. \n\n\n\n-Tasters will vote for the best pirukas in both categories. \n\n\n\n-Prizes will be given to the winners in each category. \n\n\n\n-Preparers and tasters must register by January 23\, 2025 with Liisi Fletcher – (Liisi.Fletcher@gmail.com or 347-683-3632)

DESCRIPTION:The Seventh Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America\, returns this November 6-17 @ Scandinavia House NYC\, and with virtual screenings across the U.S. \n\n\n\n\nPurchase tickets here \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe 7th Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America is back November 6-17\, 2024\, with a mix of in-person and virtual screenings of the best new films from the Baltic region. From November 6-10\, festival-goers can enjoy screenings and events at Scandinavia House in New York. For those across the U.S.\, virtual screenings of six of the films will be available to viewers from November 9–17. Screenings will be accompanied by a range of in-person film talks with directors\, producers and actors; details will be released in the coming weeks. All in-person evenings will be followed by receptions. The full fall program lineup has now been announced. The festival kicks off on Wednesday\, November 6 at 6:30 PM with the U.S. premiere of Life and Love (dir. Helen Takkin\, Estonia\, 2024). Set during the Great Depression in 1933\, this compelling drama follows Irma\, a young woman who leaves her rural home to pursue a writing career in the city. There\, she is pulled into a toxic relationship with her boss at a local print shop\, and as political tensions rise\, Irma realizes that love and ambition come at a steep cost. On Thursday\, November 7 at 7 PM\, the documentary The Mammoth Hunt revisits 1968 Lithuania\, where theater director Jonas Jurasas directs a popular and thinly veiled anti-Soviet production titled “The Mammoth Hunt.” When word gets back to Moscow\, he flees to the U.S.\, while the play’s cast stages a final act of defiance. Director Aistė Stonytė tracks down recollections from its surviving participants. Screenings on Friday\, November 8 include the North American Premiere of A Postcard From Rome (dir. Elza Gauja\, Latvia\, 2024) at 6 PM. In this gentle love story\, Latvian couple Ernests and Alvīne use a lottery scheme to fulfill their lifelong dream of traveling to Rome. As they embark on their holiday\, it becomes clear that Alvīne’s Alzheimer’s disease is rapidly progressing. At 8:15 PM\, director Marko Raat‘s 8 Views of Lake Biwa\, Estonia’s contender for Best International Feature at this year’s Academy Awards\, is a poetic fairy tale set in an Estonian fishing village. In the wake of a recent tragedy\, two teenage girls watch ships sail to Kyoto\, while villagers create erotic art and engage in spiritual spells; hailed as “one of the most unique films of the year” (Cineuropa).Saturday\, November 9 begins with a re-screening of Life and Love at 12 PM. At 3 PM\, a program of Baltic Shorts will screen six short films\, with two from each of the Baltic countries including live-action\, animation and stop motion\, including Ootid (U.S. Premiere); On Weary Wings Go By (NY Premiere); The One Who Knows (U.S. Premiere); and others. Making its North American Premiere at 5 PM\, Maria’s Silence (dir. Davis Simanis\, Latvia\, 2024) is a powerful historical drama about Maria Leiko\, a famous silent-film actress forced to abandon her career to join Skatuve\, the Latvian State Theater in Moscow\, where she was manipulated amid purges of political enemies; a film “rich in historical references and complex visual poeticism” (Cineuropa).At 7:30 PM\, director Saulė Bliuvaitė‘s gritty coming-of-age drama Toxic makes its New York Premiere. Dreaming of escape from the bleakness of their rural Lithuanian hometown\, two young teens form a unique bond at a modeling school\, where they are pushed to violate their bodies in increasingly extreme ways; “impressively tough-minded…with glimmers of tenderness and humor (Variety) and “gritty and keenly observed” (Screendaily). Sunday screenings begin at 2 PM with Parade (Paradas\, dir. Titas Laucius\, Lithuania\, 2022)\, a Baltic comedy following a former couple’s decision to finalize their divorce through Catholic Court — with unexpected consequences; “a cracking comedy” (Screen International). At 4:15 PM\, the Estonian documentary Kelly — Someone Else’s Dream explores the dark side of competitive sports with the story of freestyle skier Kelly Sildaru\, who shot to fame as an X-Games gold medalist at the age of 13 but was later revealed to have been abused; “an uplifting message of hope and empowerment” (Cineuropa). The in-person portion of the festival wraps up at 7 PM with the NYC premiere of Flow (dir. Gints Zilbalodis\, Latvia/France/Belgium\, 2024). This visually stunning animated adventure follows a brave cat who\, after a devastating flood\, teams up with a capybara\, lemur\, bird\, and dog to survive. EANC is a proud supporter of this documentary. \n\n\n\nEight decades after the Mass Flight of 1944 from Estonia it is poignant to take a look at one of the key landing places for Estonians as they tried to rebuild their lives in the United States while holding on to their hopes\, dreams\, and culture after having fled their homeland. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe paradox of Seabrook Farms is a new project by Helga Merits. \n\n\n\nThe history of the Seabrook family who created Seabrook Farms is similar to a  Greek tragedy of betrayal — of creating and destroying possibilities — where behind the scenes\, each with their own heart-breaking story\, a diverse community of refugees and immigrants lived and worked. \n\n\n\n‍In the 1950s Seabrook Farms was the biggest frozen food processing plant in the US and it needed farm and factory labour. The largest group of workers consisted of over 2\,000 Japanese Americans who had been interned during the first years of the Second World War and had been looking for a new place to live. After the war refugees from many countries in Europe came to Sea-brook Farms\, amongst them were some 900 Estonians and 200 Latvians. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n‍They all had lost their homes and had to start again. Working at Seabrook farms meant seven day weeks with ever changing shifts\, work that was both  physically and mentally draining. Amongst all the hardships they still found ways to keep up their cultural traditions and create new possibilities for their children.At the same time jealousy and distrust drove the Seabrook family apart. Instead of creating a future for his sons\, Mr Seabrook took it away from them. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe film sheds light on the puzzling history of the Seabrook family and their factory workers; people of different countries and cultural backgrounds who had no other place to go to. \n\n\n\nThere are strong parallels to the current political climate and the difficulties large numbers of refugees encounter to find a place to live and build up a new life for their families.
