SUMMARY:Estonian Independence Day
DESCRIPTION:photo: www.riigikogu.ee\n\n\n\nHappy Estonian Independence Day! \n\n\n\nHead Eesti Vabariigi aastapäeva! \n\n\n\n(scroll down for Estonian) \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRemarks on the 106th Anniversary of the Republic of Estonia\n\n\n\nDear fellow Estonians\, dear friends\, \n\n\n\nThe importance of February 24 is not lost on any Estonian. It was 106 years ago that Estonia declared its independence in the proclamation Manifest kõigile Eestimaa rahvastele. Drafted by a committee of nationally-minded Estonians\, this „Manifest to all peoples in Estonia“ was approved during the short window at the end of WWI when Russian invaders were leaving and the Germans had yet to arrive. We are rightly proud of this bold act and of all those that followedas Estonia fought to gain and regain independence over the next century.  Estonians do not take their freedom for granted. This year\, as we enter the third year of Russia’s vile invasion of Ukraine\, historical events continue to ring loudly in our collective memory. \n\n\n\nWhereas February 24th\, 1918\, marked the birth of the Republic of Estonia\, it wasn’t until two years later\, February 2\, 1920\, that the Tartu Peace Treaty was signed to mark the end of Estonia’s War of Independence\, and in which Soviet Russia recognized the independence of the Republic of Estonia in perpetuity. The treaty has been called Estonia’s birth certificate\, and had pioneering significance in international law\, in that it cited the concept of a people’s right to self-determination\, to decide their own destiny.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSo today we celebrate the freedom and self-determination that Estonia has\, and which Ukraine is fighting so hard to keep. Let us celebrate this day whole-heartedly\, with joy and with pride in our freedom\, community\, and identity. Even under the shadow of Russia’s continuing war on Ukraine\, it is important to make space in our hearts to celebrate Estonia for all that it has accomplished\, what it continues to achieve\, and for its strong international voice in these disruptive and disturbing times.  \n\n\n\nIt is certainly troubling that the war in Ukraine continues\, and we are right to be uneasy about current events\, both in Europe and here in the U.S. We urge you to channel these thoughts into inspiration for action. We encourage you to use the privilege we have as Estonian Americans – that of using our voices and participating in the democratic process. Across the US\, a record number of Estonian Americans participated in advocacy activities during the year following Russia’s invasion\, speaking out for Ukraine and for Baltic security interests.  It is of utmost importance to continue these efforts in the coming year. So much is at stake in the U.S. Congress and in the understanding of the American people.  \n\n\n\nAs Estonians we are especially aware of the stakes. As has often been said of Baltic Americans: “They know.”  We know. And we remember. This year we commemorate 80 years since the Mass Flight of 1944\, when so many fled Estonia to escape the invading Soviet forces. Our parents and grandparents were faced with the impossible choice\, they experienced the life-altering disruption – whether they fled or were left to face the brutal Soviet regime. Our families were shattered. So many years later\, eight decades later\, even as Estonia has blossomed in regained freedom\, we as a people are still putting together the pieces of family and memory to fill in the gaps of our history.  \n\n\n\nIn Estonia\, the Mass Flight of 1944 is only very recently entering the public dialogue and national consciousness in a more open way. For many younger descendants of Estonians abroad\, the story of how and why our communities developed at the same time also remains largely unknown\, or only vaguely recalled. \n\n\n\nTo help keep the conversation going\, EANC is proud to be part of a larger commemorative project that we can all support together. A memorial sculpture and place of remembrance has been commissioned in Estonia to create a permanent reminder of the Mass Flight. This graceful and symbolic sculpture will depict the last moment of the countless goodbyes\, the last touch of hands at departure\, a moment encompassing uncertainty about the future\, no matter if you left or stayed. To be sited on grounds beside the Pärnu River\, one of the areas from which thousands fled in small boats\, this memorial sculpture is scheduled to be unveiled on September 21\, 2024.  We hope this date will be a focus for Estonians worldwide to remember and to commemorate these terrible events\, each in their own way.  \n\n\n\nAs Estonian Americans we have the privilege and responsibility to connect future generations to this story. We who have ourselves experienced or have a family legacy of the experience of brokenness\, recognize the gift of this inheritance – our story — as we celebrate EV106 and commemorate the Mass Flight of 1944. \n\n\n\nWe at the Estonian American National Council urge you to celebrate the day and share the gift.   \n\n\n\nElagu Eesti! \n\n\n\nMai-Liis Bartling \n\n\n\npresident \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nEesti Rahvuskomitee Ühendriikides tervitus Eesti Vabariigi 106. aastapäeva puhul \n\n\n\nKallid sõbrad! Me teame. Ja me mäletame. Tänavu tähistame 80. aasta möödumist 1944. a. suurpõgenemisest\, kui nii paljud põgenesid Eestist pealetungivate Nõukogude vägede eest. Meie vanemad ja vanavanemad seisid võimatu valiku ees\, tehes elumuutva otsuse – kas põge-neda või jääda silmitsi jõhkra nõukogude korraga. Meie pered purunesid. \n\n\n\nElagu Eesti! \n\n\n\nEesti Vabariigi 106. aastapäeva puhul \n\n\n\nMai-Liis Bartling \n\n\n\nERKÜ president

SUMMARY:Online event: The Legacy of Juri Lotman in Tartu\, Estonia and the World
DESCRIPTION:This online program hosted by the New York Public Library will celebrate Tartu\, Estonia as a 2024 European Capital of Culture\, Tartu 2024 including luminaries of worldwide interest like Juri Lotman. The celebration will take us to memorable places in Tartu that are connected to the cultural heritage and legacy of this unique man and his city. \n\n\n\nSpeakers include Merit Maran\, Elen Lotman\, Peeter Torop. Read more about them below. \n\n\n\nPlease register to receive Zoom link to join! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nRegister here \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJuri Lotman (1922-1993) was an internationally renowned intellectual and scholar. Born to Ukrainian Jewish parents in Leningrad\, he escaped the ongoing wave of antisemitism\, culminating in the “Doctors’ Plot”\, by finding refuge in Tartu\, within the safety of ancient walls of its university. Although Estonia was also occupied by the Soviet Union at the time\, the environment was considerably more Western and Lotman didn’t experience hostility to his ethnic background. \n\n\n\nAs his academic career developed at the University of Tartu\, Lotman became the key figure in cultural semiotics. Well loved by his students and internationally respected for his works\, Lotman went beyond the academe to have his own program on the national TV and also wrote extensively on cinema. In the 2020s\, after the celebrations of his centenary\, Lotman’s intellectual legacy is still relevant and exciting – as is his life story. \n\n\n\nSpeakers include Merit Maran\, Elen Lotman\, Peeter Torop. Read more about them below. \n\n\n\nThis online program is a result of cooperation between the New York Public Library and Estonian Writers Union which was mediated by the Tartu 2024 European Capital of Culture Foundation and the Consulate General of Estonia in New York. In 2022\, the Tartu branch of the Estonian Writers Union produced a webcast on Estonian polymath Uku Masing for the World Languages Collection of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library at the NYPL\, with its premiere and online Q&A on April 26\, 2022. That webcast can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z19HnOPox-U. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers include Merit Maran\, Elen Lotman\, Peeter Torop. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKERS\n\n\n\nPeeter Torop\, PhD – Professor of Semiotics of Culture at the University of Tartu. Torop expanded the scope of the semiotic study of translation to include intratextual\, intertextual\, and extratextual translation and stressing the productivity of the notion of translation in general semiotics. He is also a co-editor of the journal Sign Systems Studies\, the oldest international semiotic periodical. As a student of Lotman himself\, Torop shares his memories of Lotman as a teacher and mentor\, ever in search of fresh insights. \n\n\n\nMerit Maran (Rickberg)\, PhD – Head of the Juri Lotman Semiotics Repository at the University of Tallinn. Maran was the main curator of Juri Lotman 100 centenary celebrations in 2022 and defended her PhD thesis\, “Towards Complexity Thinking with Juri Lotman: Modelling Cultural Dynamics in Educational Systems” in 2023. Dr. Maran focuses on the contemporary and ongoing relevance of Lotman’s approach to complexity in cultural systems. \n\n\n\nElen Lotman\, PhD – Associate Professor of Film Arts\, Baltic Film\, Media and Arts School. An award-winning cinematographer\, director and lecturer\, Elen Lotman is a granddaughter of Juri Lotman and has also translated his works on film into Estonian. Sharing a more personal side of her grandfather\, she tells of her childhood full of stories\, fun and discovery\, as well as Juri Lotman’s daily habits and love for Tartu. \n\n\n\nThis webcast has been made possible by the Cultural Endowment of Estonia and the Estonian Ministry of Culture.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll programs are subject to change or cancellation. \n\n\n\nAssistive Listening and ASL \n\n\n\nASL interpretation and real-time (CART) captioning available upon request. SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:This important film is showing at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute. EANC is a proud supporter of the making of this documentary. \n\n\n\nEight decades after the Mass Flight of 1944 from Estonia it is poignant to take a look at one of the key landing places for Estonians as they tried to rebuild their lives while holding on to their hopes\, dreams\, and culture after having fled their homeland. \n\n\n\nThe Paradox of Seabrook Farms is a new project by Helga Merits. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe history of the Seabrook family who created Seabrook Farms is similar to a  Greek tragedy of betrayal — of creating and destroying possibilities — where behind the scenes\, each with their own heart-breaking story\, a diverse community of refugees and immigrants lived and worked. \n\n\n\n‍In the 1950s Seabrook Farms was the biggest frozen food processing plant in the US and it needed farm and factory labour. The largest group of workers consisted of over 2\,000 Japanese Americans who had been interned during the first years of the Second World War and had been looking for a new place to live. After the war refugees from many countries in Europe came to Sea-brook Farms\, amongst them were some 900 Estonians and 200 Latvians. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n‍They all had lost their homes and had to start again. Working at Seabrook farms meant seven day weeks with ever changing shifts\, work that was both  physically and mentally draining. Amongst all the hardships they still found ways to keep up their cultural traditions and create new possibilities for their children. At the same time jealousy and distrust drove the Seabrook family apart. Instead of creating a future for his sons\, Mr Seabrook took it away from them. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe film sheds light on the puzzling history of the Seabrook family and their factory workers; people of different countries and cultural backgrounds who had no other place to go to. \n\n\n\nThere are strong parallels to the current political climate and the difficulties large numbers of refugees encounter to find a place to live and build up a new life for their families.

SUMMARY:NY Baltic Film Festival 2024
DESCRIPTION:The Seventh Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America\, returns this November 6-17 @ Scandinavia House NYC\, and with virtual screenings across the U.S. \n\n\n\n\nPurchase tickets here \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe 7th Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America is back November 6-17\, 2024\, with a mix of in-person and virtual screenings of the best new films from the Baltic region. From November 6-10\, festival-goers can enjoy screenings and events at Scandinavia House in New York. For those across the U.S.\, virtual screenings of six of the films will be available to viewers from November 9–17. Screenings will be accompanied by a range of in-person film talks with directors\, producers and actors; details will be released in the coming weeks. All in-person evenings will be followed by receptions. The full fall program lineup has now been announced. The festival kicks off on Wednesday\, November 6 at 6:30 PM with the U.S. premiere of Life and Love (dir. Helen Takkin\, Estonia\, 2024). Set during the Great Depression in 1933\, this compelling drama follows Irma\, a young woman who leaves her rural home to pursue a writing career in the city. There\, she is pulled into a toxic relationship with her boss at a local print shop\, and as political tensions rise\, Irma realizes that love and ambition come at a steep cost. On Thursday\, November 7 at 7 PM\, the documentary The Mammoth Hunt revisits 1968 Lithuania\, where theater director Jonas Jurasas directs a popular and thinly veiled anti-Soviet production titled “The Mammoth Hunt.” When word gets back to Moscow\, he flees to the U.S.\, while the play’s cast stages a final act of defiance. Director Aistė Stonytė tracks down recollections from its surviving participants. Screenings on Friday\, November 8 include the North American Premiere of A Postcard From Rome (dir. Elza Gauja\, Latvia\, 2024) at 6 PM. In this gentle love story\, Latvian couple Ernests and Alvīne use a lottery scheme to fulfill their lifelong dream of traveling to Rome. As they embark on their holiday\, it becomes clear that Alvīne’s Alzheimer’s disease is rapidly progressing. At 8:15 PM\, director Marko Raat‘s 8 Views of Lake Biwa\, Estonia’s contender for Best International Feature at this year’s Academy Awards\, is a poetic fairy tale set in an Estonian fishing village. In the wake of a recent tragedy\, two teenage girls watch ships sail to Kyoto\, while villagers create erotic art and engage in spiritual spells; hailed as “one of the most unique films of the year” (Cineuropa).Saturday\, November 9 begins with a re-screening of Life and Love at 12 PM. Davis Simanis\, Latvia\, 2024) is a powerful historical drama about Maria Leiko\, a famous silent-film actress forced to abandon her career to join Skatuve\, the Latvian State Theater in Moscow\, where she was manipulated amid purges of political enemies; a film “rich in historical references and complex visual poeticism” (Cineuropa). At 7:30 PM\, director Saulė Bliuvaitė‘s gritty coming-of-age drama Toxic makes its New York Premiere. Dreaming of escape from the bleakness of their rural Lithuanian hometown\, two young teens form a unique bond at a modeling school\, where they are pushed to violate their bodies in increasingly extreme ways; “impressively tough-minded…with glimmers of tenderness and humor (Variety) and “gritty and keenly observed” (Screendaily). Sunday screenings begin at 2 PM with Parade (Paradas\, dir. Titas Laucius\, Lithuania\, 2022)\, a Baltic comedy following a former couple’s decision to finalize their divorce through Catholic Court — with unexpected consequences; “a cracking comedy” (Screen International). At 4:15 PM\, the Estonian documentary Kelly — Someone Else’s Dream explores the dark side of competitive sports with the story of freestyle skier Kelly Sildaru\, who shot to fame as an X-Games gold medalist at the age of 13 but was later revealed to have been abused; “an uplifting message of hope and empowerment” (Cineuropa). The in-person portion of the festival wraps up at 7 PM with the NYC premiere of Flow (dir. Gints Zilbalodis\, Latvia/France/Belgium\, 2024). This visually stunning animated adventure follows a brave cat who\, after a devastating flood\, teams up with a capybara\, lemur\, bird\, and dog to survive. Praised as “one of the most moving animated films in recent memory” (IndieWire) and “a joy to experience…a deeply affecting story” (THR)\, Flow is Latvia’s official entry for Best Animated Feature at the 97th Academy Awards. For program updates\, please subscribe to the festival newsletter at balticfilmfestival.com and Scandinavia House newsletter at scandinaviahouse.org. SUMMARY:Sunday Matinee at the Lakewood Estonian House
DESCRIPTION:The Lakewood Estonian Association invites members to the Eesti Maja for a Sunday matinee\, showing the Estonian comedy “Suvitajad.” The film is based on the book of the same name\, authored by Juhan Smuul. \n\n\n\nNot a member of the Lakewood Estonian Association yet? No problem! Reach out: lakewoodestonianhouse@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKalur Ärni on otsustanud nigela kalasaagi tõttu jaaniajaks suvitajad võtta.
