SUMMARY:Stanford University hosts Estonian Ambassador Kristjan Prikk for a talk on "Russia's War in Ukraine and its Implications on European Security: Why should America care?"
DESCRIPTION:Can´t make it to California? Watch the live stream of this important discussion hosted by Stanford University. \n\n\n\nMore than ten years into Russia’s war against Ukraine and more than two years after Moscow launched a full-scale aggression\, there is still no end in sight to the largest military conflict in Europe after WWII. What are the implications of this war on the security of Europe but also on the United States? What would it take to end the war and in what kind of a world will we all live on the day after it’s all over? The event will feature a discussion on the possibility of a viable Western strategy for success that not only saves Ukraine but also strengthens the United States’ role as the leader of the free world. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOpening remarks will be delivered by Amir Weiner\, Associate Professor of History and Director of Stanford’s Center for Russian\, East European and Eurasian Studies. \n\n\n\nDetails: events.stanford.edu/event/russias-war-in-ukraine \n\n\n\n\nGo to live stream\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEstonia’s Ambassador to the U.S. Kristjan Prikk started his mission in Washington\, D.C. in May 2021. SUMMARY:Atlantic Council Talk: Securing the Eastern Flank: A Baltic Agenda for 2024 NATO Summit
DESCRIPTION:In Case You Missed it\, watch the video on our YouTube page or by clicking the button below: \n\n\n\n\nWatch video \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJoin in person or online to attend the Atlantic Council’s Transatlantic Security Initiative\, in the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security\, for a public event exploring the Baltic states’ priorities for the upcoming NATO Summit in Washington\, DC. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSince last year’s Summit in Vilnius\, Lithuania\, the security landscape in NATO’s eastern flank has shifted significantly. New defense plans and strong defense spending\, coupled with the historic accession of Sweden and Finland\, has reorganized the Baltic Sea into a “NATO lake.” Despite this major step forward for regional security\, ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine demands a continued focus on stability. The NATO Summit taking place in Washington\, DC\, presents a pivotal opportunity to solidify allied gains made since last July and send a strong signal to Moscow amid continuing war on the European continent.   \n\n\n\nWith less than five weeks until the Washington Summit\, the Atlantic Council is pleased to welcome the Lithuanian\, Latvian\, and Estonian Permanent Representatives to NATO for a discussion exploring Baltic defense priorities and views on the future of NATO beyond its 75th anniversary. The Permanent Representatives will delve into the collaborative efforts between the US\, the Baltic states\, and other NATO allies as they strengthen efforts to bolster support for Ukraine and collective defense and deterrence on NATO’s eastern flank. \n\n\n\nThis event is part of the Transatlantic Security Initiative’s 2024 NATO Washington Summit campaign. For more information and updates on future events and publications\, follow @ACScowcroft.  This conversation will take place in-person and will be broadcast on YouTube\, X\, Facebook\, and LinkedIn. \n\n\n\nFEATURED SPEAKERSH.E. SUMMARY:AABS Conference 2024
DESCRIPTION:The 29th Biennial AABS Conference – The Baltic Way: Unity and Giving Aid\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDaily Schedule\n\n\n\n\nEstonia\, Latvia\, and Lithuania have for over the past century shown the benefits of shared action and solidarity. The three states sought recognition of their independence following World War I\, and following World War II – through the years of Soviet occupation – they maintained that recognition through collaborative efforts. In recent decades the joint efforts of their peoples were seen in the peaceful Baltic Way demonstration in August 1989 when Balts joined hands from Tallinn to Vilnius across a distance of 600 kilometers\, and in the three countries’ together joining NATO in 2004. Today\, the three Baltic countries are leading the world in per capita aid to Ukraine after Russia’s invasion in February 2022.  \n\n\n\nGathering at the 29th biennial conference of the Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies (AABS)\, to be held on the campus of Yale University on June 13-16\, 2024\, will be hundreds of people dedicated to the study of the peoples and lands around the Baltic Sea. The conference features panels from all fields of the humanities and social sciences\, education\, technology\, transnational security\, safety\, and well-being. The conference draws attention to the larger shared space throughout the Baltic Sea region as well as to the role the peoples of the Baltic are playing on an all-European and global scale. The conference\, held on location\, is co-hosted by Yale University and the University of New Haven. \n\n\n\nEANC is a proud sponsor of this impactful conference. \n\n\n\n\nProgram overview \n\n\n\nProgram Schedule by Day

SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:This important film is showing at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute. EANC is a proud supporter of the making of this documentary. \n\n\n\nEight decades after the Mass Flight of 1944 from Estonia it is poignant to take a look at one of the key landing places for Estonians as they tried to rebuild their lives while holding on to their hopes\, dreams\, and culture after having fled their homeland. \n\n\n\nThe Paradox of Seabrook Farms is a new project by Helga Merits. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe history of the Seabrook family who created Seabrook Farms is similar to a  Greek tragedy of betrayal — of creating and destroying possibilities — where behind the scenes\, each with their own heart-breaking story\, a diverse community of refugees and immigrants lived and worked. \n\n\n\n‍In the 1950s Seabrook Farms was the biggest frozen food processing plant in the US and it needed farm and factory labour. The largest group of workers consisted of over 2\,000 Japanese Americans who had been interned during the first years of the Second World War and had been looking for a new place to live. After the war refugees from many countries in Europe came to Sea-brook Farms\, amongst them were some 900 Estonians and 200 Latvians. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n‍They all had lost their homes and had to start again. Working at Seabrook farms meant seven day weeks with ever changing shifts\, work that was both  physically and mentally draining. Amongst all the hardships they still found ways to keep up their cultural traditions and create new possibilities for their children. At the same time jealousy and distrust drove the Seabrook family apart. Instead of creating a future for his sons\, Mr Seabrook took it away from them. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe film sheds light on the puzzling history of the Seabrook family and their factory workers; people of different countries and cultural backgrounds who had no other place to go to. \n\n\n\nThere are strong parallels to the current political climate and the difficulties large numbers of refugees encounter to find a place to live and build up a new life for their families.

SUMMARY:Film Screening @ NY Estonian House: Paradox of Seabrook Farms
DESCRIPTION:A special film screening of the documentary film “The Paradox of Seabrook Farms” by Merits Productions\, hosted at the New York Estonian House. This is an excellent overview and look into the times\, culture\, joys and struggles experienced at Seabrook Farms\, a place that many of us recognize as a hub of Estonian immigrants folowing the Mass Flight of 1944. \n\n\n\nEANC is a proud supporter of this and other films by historian and filmmaker Helga Merits. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArrive for the matinee\, enjoy a discussion and Q&A with the director\, and stay for the following celebration of the 107th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia (Eesti Vabariigi 107. aastapäev)! \n\n\n\nEnjoy the day at the New York Estonian House\, celebrating Estonian history and community. \n\n\n\n11:45 – 1:15pm Documentary viewing1:15 – 1:40pm Q&A with director Helga Merits \n\n\n\nFilm Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fmaFK4j81k&t=48s \n\n\n\nFilm info: https://www.meritsproductions.com/…/the-paradox-of… \n\n\n\nThe Paradox of Seabrook Farms\, 1 hr 30 minutes. \n\n\n\nThe history of the Seabrook family who created Seabrook Farms is similar to a Greek tragedy of betrayal — of creating and destroying possibilities — where behind the scenes\, each with their own heart-breaking story\, a diverse community of refugees and immigrants lived and worked.‍In the 1950s Seabrook Farms was the biggest frozen food processing plant in the US and it needed farm and factory labor. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHelga Merits is a documentary filmmaker with Estonian roots living in Holland. After completing a successful study of philosophy at the University of Amsterdam\, she went on to work as a newspaper and radio journalist in Holland and Belgium. It was during this period that the idea of making documentaries began to grow; image and sound\, as well as words\, were to influence her work from then on. \n\n\n\nHelga Merits: “In the end\, this is what it’s all about: to convey the story and make people enthusiastic\, hopeful and give them inspiration.” (Eesti Elu\, 21 October 2017)

A day to embrace! (full schedule below) \n\n\n\nEstonia — Estonia is a place for independent minds \n\n\n\nHow do Estonians celebrate Independence Day?\n\n\n\nEach year\, February 24th is marked by fireworks\, concerts\, a parade of the Defense Forces\, and a presidential reception. Families come from all over to admire military units and listen to the orchestras of the Estonian Defense Forces\, Police and Border Guard\, and the United States Air Force. Following the parade\, the Estonian president usually gives a televised speech and bestows state decorations to guests of honor at a national reception. Most events are also broadcast on TV throughout the day. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nHere’s the typical schedule for Independence Day celebrations on February 24th:\n\n\n\n\nThe day begins with a flag-raising ceremony early in the morning. The ceremonial hoisting of the national flag at the Pikk Hermann Tower is open to the public.\n\n\n\nThe parade of the Defense Forces usually takes place in Tallinn’s Freedom Square.\n\n\n\nThe president hosts a public reception and gala concert at the Estonian Theater and Concert Hall.\n\n\n\n\nThere may also be events in support of Ukraine this year\, as February 24th also marks the third anniversary of Russia’s war of aggression. \n\n\n\nSource: visitestonia.com \n\n\n\nETV saatejuhid vabariigi aastapäeval: Andres Kuusk\, Taavi Eilat\, Anu Välba\, Marko Reikop Autor/allikas: Ken Mürk/ERR\n\n\n\n24. veebruari sündmustest saab läbi päeva otsepildis osa nii ETV\, ETV2\, ETV+ kui ka ERR-i portaali ja Jupiteri vahendusel. \n\n\n\nAastapäeva ülekanded 24.02\n\n\n\n7.30 Pidulik riigilipu heiskamineETV\, ETV2 (viipekeeles)\, ETV+\, Vikerraadio\, Raadio 4\, ERR.ee portaal \n\n\n\nKuberneri aias toimuval sündmusel peab kõne riigikogu esimees Lauri Hussar. SUMMARY:Webinar: The Fate of Europe: Ukraine\, the Baltic Region\, and Collective Security
DESCRIPTION:The Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies hosts this online roundtable discussion on “The Fate of Europe: Ukraine\, the Baltic Region\, and Collective Security.” \n\n\n\nSince 2014\, the Ukrainian state and society have shown strength and resilience in resisting Russian aggression. Given the decisions of the new United States administration to engage Putin’s Russia and chastise Ukrainian leadership\, will Ukraine be able to continue defending its sovereignty? What are the implications of the recent changes in the US position towards Russia for European security\, including Nordic and Baltic security? How will Europeans approach their collective security in a new era of transatlantic relations? \n\n\n\nThese and other questions will be tackled by Hanna Shelest (Foreign Policy Council “Ukrainian Prism”) Marko Lehti (Tampere Peace Research Institute)\, and Ginta Palubinskas (West Virginia State University). The webinar will be moderated by Daunis Auers (University of Latvia) and welcome remarks will be delivered by AABS President Jörg Hackmann (University of Szczecin).  \n\n\n\nLearn more about the participants on the AABS website. \n\n\n\n\nRegister here
