The five excellent nominees were selected from amongst 14 strong candidates. \n\n\n\nThe winners will be announced by press release poste t omedia outlets\, the EANC website and Facebook page. on January 2\, 2026\, the anniversary of Visnapuu’s birth.   \n\n\n\nThe awards will officially be presented at a special event on January 7\, 2026\, starting at 6 pm\, at the Estonian Wrietrs House\, Harju 1\, Tallinn\, Estonia. The public is welcome to attend. We will do our best to provide a live stream of the special event\, which will include words from the jury and from the laureates themselves\, coupled with a performance by songwriter Kalev Vapper.

DESCRIPTION:The Connecticut Estonian Society hosts its annual Diaspora Estonia Day with a potluck-style dinner\, a fun afternoon with friends old and new\, and a wonderful documentary about a wonderful Estonian. Join us on  Saturday\, November 8th at 1:30 p.m. at the Romanian Church *formerly Latvian Church) in Manchester\, CT \n\n\n\nWe will join in the global festivities this year to celebrate the 90th birthday of beloved Estonian composer Arvo Pärt.  \n\n\n\nAs in years past\, CES will provide roast pork for the potluck meal and asks guests to bring side dishes\, desserts\, and BYOB.  Please email Leena Kangro at leenakangro@gmail.com to let her know what you can bring.   \n\n\n\nThe donation will be $15 for adults\, while students/children are free.  The program begins at 2:00 p.m.  Program details are below. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nPROGRAM \n\n\n\nWe will watch a documentary about Arvo Pärt entitled Arvo Pärt: Even if I Lose Everything\, which is an intimate portrait that explores the man behind the music\, showing his many sides as he navigates the demands of his legacy.  Once known as the avant-garde firebrand driven from his country by Soviet censorship for his radically prayerful melodies\, Even If I Lose Everything centers on the gentler rhythms of Pärt’s days back home on the eve of his 80th birthday in 2015.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLast week was a time of pride and excitement for all Estonians with two highly-anticipated concerts at Carnegie Hall in New York City on October 23rd and October 24th in the presence of H.E. Mr. Alar Karis\, President of the Republic of Estonia\, and Mrs. Sirje Karis.  This two-day celebration of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt brought together the Grammy award-winning Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir under the direction of Maestro Tõnu Kaljuste\, Estonian Festival Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Paavo Järvi\, world-renowned violinist Midori\, violinist Hans Christian Aavik\, pianist Nico Muhly\, the Trinity Choir\, and the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra.  These performances united audiences from across the United States and beyond in tribute to one of the most influential living composers in the realm of sacred and minimalist music. The New York Times gave very positive reviews of the concerts\, stating “Arvo Pärt Gets the 90th Birthday Concert He Deserves”. \n\n\n\nYou can learn more about Arvo Pärt’s life and music from here (provided by the Arvo Pärt Centre in Estonia\, which combines his personal archive along with an information and music center)\, along with interesting insights about him from Carnegie Hall \n\n\n\nMeeldetuletus – Reminder \n\n\n\nIf you\, or someone you know\, are not yet a member of the Connecticut Estonian Society\, please join us!  It’s a great opportunity to join a close-knit community of Estonian Americans and Estophiles of all ages from Connecticut and surrounding states to celebrate and preserve our Estonian culture and traditions.  To become a member\, or if you are already a member and would like to easily pay your dues\, you can learn more at our website.  Your support is vital for us to provide important programming and maintain our “Eesti Maa” (Connecticut Estonian Grounds) in Andover\, CT\, our beautiful 12-acre property where we have gathered for 60 years.

DESCRIPTION:The Joint Baltic American National Committee will host its next Baltic Spotlight on October 29 at 8 p.m. ET\, featuring Benjamin Schmitt\, Senior Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania and Senior Fellow for Democratic Resilience at the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA). \n\n\n\nSince Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine\, it has intensified attacks on European infrastructure\, seeking to destabilize and sow doubt within European civil society. The International House Association (IHA) represents a collection of historic Rockefeller International Houses and centers around the world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBiography of President Alar Karis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlar Karis is an Estonian molecular geneticist and developmental biologist. He has served as the President of the Republic of Estonia since 11 October 2021. \n\n\n\nAlar Karis was born on 26 March 1958 in Tartu. \n\n\n\nHe graduated from the Estonian Agricultural Academy (now the Estonian University of Life Sciences) in 1981. He was awarded a Master of Science degree in 1987. Alar Karis has worked in a variety of research institutes in Germany\, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. He was awarded the status of professor at the University of Tartu in 1999. His research has been among the most widely cited internationally of any Estonian scientist of his generation. \n\n\n\nAlar Karis was one of the co-founders of Visgenyx\, a company which grew out of the University of Tartu and undertook research and development in the field of biotechnology. \n\n\n\nAlar Karis was elected rector of the University of Tartu in 2007. He has also served as the rector of the Estonian University of Life Sciences\, as the Auditor-General of the Republic of Estonia and as the head of the EUROSAI Working Group on Environmental Auditing (EUROSAI WGEA). He has led the work of Universities Estonia (the national council of university rectors) a number of times. \n\n\n\nPrior to being elected president\, Alar Karis was working as the director of the Estonian National Museum. \n\n\n\nHe has previously been a member of the Academic Council and Academic Advisory Board of the President of the Republic and of the Research and Development Council; a member of the supervisory boards of the Estonian Fund for Nature\, the European University Association\, the International Council of Archives\, the International Council of Museums\, the museums of the University of Tartu and the Estonian Literary Museum; a member of the advisory board to the Entrepreneurship & Living Environment Development Division of Enterprise Estonia; and the chairman of the supervisory boards of the Estonian Development Fund and (from 2020-2021) the Estonian University of Life Sciences. \n\n\n\nAlar Karis served as the honorary consul to the Republic of Chile in Estonia from 2010-2021. \n\n\n\nHe has been awarded the Order of the White Star\, 4th class. He is also a recipient of the Commander’s cross of the Order of Leopold II of Belgium\, the Commander’s cross of the Royal Order of the Polar Star of Sweden\, the Commander’s cross of the Order of the Lion of Finland\, the Latvian Cross of Recognition\, 3rd class and Order of the National Coat of Arms chain\, and the Royal Order of the Seraphim of the Kingdom of Sweden. \n\n\n\nAlar Karis is married to Sirje Karis. They have three children.

DESCRIPTION:Tartu Academic Male Choir (TAM) is Coming to the USA!  \n\n\n\nJoin them for a special concert by the Tartu Academic Male Choir from Estonia. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur fifth and final concert of the tour will be held in New York alongside with The New York Estonian Mixed Choir! \n\n\n\nFounded in 1912\, TAM is the oldest continuously active male choir in Estonia and an important part of our country’s musical tradition. The conductors of the choir are Roland Viilukas and Made Ritsing. \n\n\n\nOn this North American tour\, 30 singers will perform beautiful Estonian and European choral music\, including works by famous composers like Arvo Pärt\, Veljo Tormis\, and many more. \n\n\n\nOur fifth and final concert of the tour will be held in New York alongside with The New York Estonian Mixed Choir! The choir was formed in 2013 when the New York Estonian Men’s Chorus and the New York Estonian Women’s Chorus became one. The choir also visited XXVIII Song Celebration’s Festival 2025 in Estonia! DESCRIPTION:The restoration of Estonia’s independence was a pivotal moment in the country’s history\, marking the end of over five decades of Soviet occupation. On August 20\, 1991\, the Supreme Council of the Republic of Estonia declared the illegal Soviet occupation and annexation of the country terminated\, and proclaimed the full restoration of the independence of Estonia. This declaration was made at 23:02 local time and was followed by a series of events that led to the international recognition of Estonia’s independence. The day is now celebrated annually as the Restoration of Independence Day (Taasiseseisvumispäev)\, a day of national pride and remembrance of the country’s freedom. Estonia’s Independence Day is Feb 24th.  \n\n\n\nPlease scroll down for the EANC statement in celebration of this important anniversary. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEANC Greeting on the 34th Anniversary of the Restoration of the Republic of Estonia \n\n\n\nDear fellow Estonians in the United States\, friends and supporters\,  \n\n\n\nOn August 20\, 1991\, Estonia took back its freedom and restored its independence\, and so today we celebrate with pride and happiness. Estonia is free!  Breathe it in!   \n\n\n\nMany of us still remember the years before\, when our families were torn apart\, and those in Estonia lived under fear and constraint. We remember the bold actions of those who used every opportunity to work toward Estonia’s freedom. We remember how it felt to finally see our dream of a free Estonia come true. This freedom must never be taken for granted. \n\n\n\nWhether celebrating individually or in community\, we can pause to reflect on this recent history\, which took place within many of our lifetimes or those of our parents and grandparents. And surely\, we can be proud of Estonia’s accomplishments of the last 34 years\, as we share and promote our culture here.  The anniversary of restored independence is also a good opportunity to consider how to respond outside of Estonia – specifically as Estonian Americans – to today’s international challenges.   \n\n\n\nIn that spirit\, we call on our elected officials and public servants to use the huge leverage held by the U.S. in this critical moment to shape a just and lasting peace for Ukraine\, to be a force for enduring global security\, including for Estonia and our Baltic neighbors.  Purposeful action and resolve will be required\, as well as a clear memory and accurate account of the recent past.   \n\n\n\nThis is also an appropriate week to remember other key moments in recent history. On August 23\, 1939\, the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact was signed between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. It included a secret protocol that divided Eastern Europe into German and Soviet spheres of influence\, and ultimately put the sovereign nations of Estonia\, Latvia\, Lithuania forcibly and illegally under Soviet rule. While presented as a non-aggression pact\, this backroom deal effectively paved the way for World War II. To mark the 50th anniversary of this appalling occasion\, on August 23\, 1989\, two million Balts joined hands to form a human chain spanning more than 400 miles across the three Baltic countries\, a peaceful yet powerful demonstration with one demand: freedom for Estonia\, Latvia and Lithuania. Seen by the world\, the human chain became a critical milestone now called the Baltic Way — forever a touchpoint in the Baltics’ determined march to freedom from the Soviet Union. \n\n\n\nWe wish for Ukraine that which Estonia today enjoys – freedom\, security\, and the power to determine its own future. We hope that when Ukrainians celebrate their independence on August 24\, 2026\, Ukraine will be at peace and free of Russian occupation. \n\n\n\nThe Estonian American National Council calls on all Baltic Americans and our supporters to make their voices heard this week\, to remind  the policy makers and elected officials of our own recent history and experience with Russia\, as well as of the plight of everyday Ukrainians\, who are laying down their lives to defend their land\, nation\, and people against Russian aggression Whether it is by participating in an event\, or by directly contacting representatives or the press\, our collective and loud voices are needed now.   \n\n\n\nLong live freedom! Long live the Republic of Estonia!

Join us on July 16 at 7 PM – First United Methodist Church\, 64 W Chocolate Ave\, Hershey\, PA 17033 \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe 12-member Arsis Handbell Ensemble\, conducted by Aivar Mäe\, has been invited to perform at the prestigious “Pinnacle 2025” festival in Wichita\, Kansas. This is one of the most important handbell music events in the United States\, where performers are selected through a competitive application process. We are honored to represent Estonia on this international stage. \n\n\n\nThe concert tour will take place from July 5 to 18\, 2025\, featuring eight performances in the following cities: Baltimore (MD)\, Pittsburgh (PA)\, Louisville (KY)\, Wichita (KS)\, Alton (IL)\, Chicago (IL)\, Akron (OH)\, and Hershey (PA). \n\n\n\nThis tour is made possible with the support of the Estonian Cultural Endowment\, the Estonian American National Council\, AS Tallink Grupp\, and GIGA Ehitus OÜ. \n\n\n\nWe’re excited to share Estonia’s unique handbell tradition with American audiences! \n\n\n\nTour Schedule and Venues: \n\n\n\n– July 7 at 7 PM – Church of the Resurrection\, 11525 Greenspring Ave\, Timonium\, MD 21093 \n\n\n\n– July 8 at 7 PM – Saints John and Paul Church – Cardinal DiNardo Center\, 2586 Wexford Bayne Rd.\, Sewickley\, PA 15143 \n\n\n\n– July 9 at 7 PM – Christ Church United Methodist\, 4614 Brownsboro Rd.\, Louisville\, KY 40207 \n\n\n\n– July 11 at 6 PM – Pinnacle 2025 Festival\, Century II Performing Arts Center\, 225 W Douglas Ave.\, Wichita\, KS 67202 \n\n\n\n– July 12 at 7 PM – Benjamin Godfrey Memorial Chapel\, 5800 Godfrey Rd.\, Godfrey\, IL 62035 \n\n\n\n– July 13 at 6 PM – Christus Victor Lutheran Church\, 1045 S.
