SUMMARY:Film Screening @ NY Estonian House: Paradox of Seabrook Farms
DESCRIPTION:A special film screening of the documentary film “The Paradox of Seabrook Farms” by Merits Productions\, hosted at the New York Estonian House. This is an excellent overview and look into the times\, culture\, joys and struggles experienced at Seabrook Farms\, a place that many of us recognize as a hub of Estonian immigrants folowing the Mass Flight of 1944. \n\n\n\nEANC is a proud supporter of this and other films by historian and filmmaker Helga Merits. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArrive for the matinee\, enjoy a discussion and Q&A with the director\, and stay for the following celebration of the 107th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia (Eesti Vabariigi 107. aastapäev)! \n\n\n\nEnjoy the day at the New York Estonian House\, celebrating Estonian history and community. \n\n\n\n11:45 – 1:15pm Documentary viewing1:15 – 1:40pm Q&A with director Helga Merits \n\n\n\nFilm Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fmaFK4j81k&t=48s \n\n\n\nFilm info: https://www.meritsproductions.com/…/the-paradox-of… \n\n\n\nThe Paradox of Seabrook Farms\, 1 hr 30 minutes. \n\n\n\nThe history of the Seabrook family who created Seabrook Farms is similar to a Greek tragedy of betrayal — of creating and destroying possibilities — where behind the scenes\, each with their own heart-breaking story\, a diverse community of refugees and immigrants lived and worked.‍In the 1950s Seabrook Farms was the biggest frozen food processing plant in the US and it needed farm and factory labor. The largest group of workers consisted of over 2\,000 Japanese Americans who had been interned during the first years of the Second World War and had been looking for a new place to live. After the war refugees from many countries in Europe came to Sea-brook Farms\, amongst them were some 900 Estonians and 200 Latvians.‍They all had lost their homes and had to start again. Working at Seabrook farms meant seven day weeks with ever changing shifts\, work that was both physically and mentally draining. Amongst all the hardships they still found ways to keep up their cultural traditions and create new possibilities for their children. At the same time jealousy and distrust drove the Seabrook family apart. Instead of creating a future for his sons\, Mr Seabrook took it away from them. \n\n\n\nThe film sheds light on the puzzling history of the Seabrook family and their factory workers; people of different countries and cultural backgrounds who had no other place to go to. \n\n\n\nSeabrooki farmi asutajate perekonna ajalugu meenutab Kreeka tragöödiat. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHelga Merits is a documentary filmmaker with Estonian roots living in Holland. After completing a successful study of philosophy at the University of Amsterdam\, she went on to work as a newspaper and radio journalist in Holland and Belgium. It was during this period that the idea of making documentaries began to grow; image and sound\, as well as words\, were to influence her work from then on. \n\n\n\nHelga Merits: “In the end\, this is what it’s all about: to convey the story and make people enthusiastic\, hopeful and give them inspiration.” (Eesti Elu\, 21 October 2017)

SUMMARY:Film Screening: The Paradox of Seabrook Farms
DESCRIPTION:This important documentary by historian Helga Merits is showing at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute. EANC is a proud supporter of this documentary. \n\n\n\nEight decades after the Mass Flight of 1944 from Estonia it is poignant to take a look at one of the key landing places for Estonians as they tried to rebuild their lives in the United States while holding on to their hopes\, dreams\, and culture after having fled their homeland. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe paradox of Seabrook Farms is a new project by Helga Merits. \n\n\n\nThe history of the Seabrook family who created Seabrook Farms is similar to a  Greek tragedy of betrayal — of creating and destroying possibilities — where behind the scenes\, each with their own heart-breaking story\, a diverse community of refugees and immigrants lived and worked. \n\n\n\n‍In the 1950s Seabrook Farms was the biggest frozen food processing plant in the US and it needed farm and factory labour. SUMMARY:A Commemorative Event Marking 80 Years since the Mass Flight of 1944
DESCRIPTION:It has been 80 years since the fateful year of 1944\, when an estimated ~80\,000 Estonians made the impossible choice to flee persecution by the occupying Soviet power — leaving behind beloved homeland and splitting families — to face an uncertain journey in hope of freedom and life. \n\n\n\nThe only words that might sum up this impossible choice: ´Minna ei taha\, kuid jääda ei saa.´ \n\n\n\nEANC\, together with the Estonian Embassy\, the New York Estonian Educational Society\, and the Foundation for Estonian Arts and Letters\, invite you to this commemorative event recalling this tragic period of history while celebrating our culture and the determination and community of Estonians. \n\n\n\nPresident of the Republic of Estonia\, H.E. Mr. Alar Karis\, is scheduled to join us at this event\, featuring recollections\, a keynote address\, a moving exhibit\, musical performances\, and closing with a reception. \n\n\n\nRegistration is required. SUMMARY:EIMH Summer School 2024: `The Fateful Year of 1944´
DESCRIPTION:26. MAR 2024 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Estonian Institute of Historical Memory welcomes participants to Summer School from August 4 – 9\, 2024. This year\, we are especially encouraging young people of Estonian heritage to apply. We welcome applications from upper secondary school and undergraduate students. The aim of the Summer School is to introduce young people to 20th century Estonian history and give them an opportunity to forge new friendships and visit their ancestral homeland. \n\n\n\nWhat was this country that was created in 1918 and was fought over in the subsequent War of Independence? What were people fleeing from\, defying the autumn storms of 1944\, sometimes at the cost of their lives? What lay ahead for those who stayed? \n\n\n\nAs a result of the terrors of the occupying power\, Estonia lost a fifth of its population of just over one million. In total\, more than 75\,000 Estonians were murdered\, imprisoned or deported. Despite the dangers\, an estimated 80\,000 people decided to escape to the free world. There were no illusions about what was to come after the first Soviet occupation in 1940. \n\n\n\nThe Summer School includes presentations\, film screenings\, excursions\, visits to museums and places of remembrance and discussions. It is also an opportunity to explore Estonia’s beautiful nature. In addition to the capital\, Tallinn\, we will also visit Tartu\, the European Capital of Culture 2024\, and spend a day in Viljandi. You will also have the chance to swim in a bog lake and see how Estonia’s “Forest Brothers” lived as they fought for freedom and against a foreign rule. \n\n\n\nOn the other side of the Iron Curtain\, the spirit and ideas of freedom were carried on by those who had left. In 1991\, we restored our independence\, and now we can be together again. So come on over! \n\n\n\nParticipation at the summer school is free of charge. The Estonian Institute of Historical Memory covers the costs of the programme\, catering and accommodation in twin rooms. Participants are responsible for organizing and paying for their transport*to and from Estonia. Applications to the Summer School are open until 30 April and applicants will be notified of the results by 6 May. \n\n\n\n*NB! The Estonian American National Council is offering two lucky students support in the amount of $1250 toward travel costs to encourage and enable participation in this important course. \n\n\n\n\nEANC Grant Info\n\n\n\n\nPlease note the summer school application deadline is April 30. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions about the course\, please contact Mälu Institute at konkurss@mnemosyne.ee \n\n\n\nSummer School Application link:  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSduUflfJ5yduZ3IgwAsbZqnivYd5ZVVE7MX71vqB-lSXBXGwg/viewform?usp=sharing
