2005 Activity Summary

A. WORK IN THE UNITED STATES

1. Cooperation with Other Organizations

  • Participated in the activities of the Joint Baltic American Committee (JBANC) and the Central and East European Coalition.
  • Participated as a member of the Worldwide Estonian Council, Inc.
  • Supported the Victims of Communism Fund campaign to erect a memorial in Washington, D.C.

2.Support and Promote Estonian American Youth Activities

  • Provided budgeted and special request grants to Estonian youth organizations in the   United States.
  • Estonian Schools’ Conference in Lakewood, N.J.
  • The League of Societies of Friends of the Estonian Boy Scouts and Girl Guides for repairs to the Lakewood, N.J. camp grounds.
  • Estonian Girl Guides and Boy Scouts
  • Distributed information about Estonian language summer courses at the University of Tartu.
  • Supported a youth activities coordination program.
  • Continued the youth activities recognition program.  Provided funding to the Portland, Oregon, Estonian Society for this purpose.

3. Support and promote Estonian Culture

  • Celebrated the 87th anniversary of Estonian independence and the 61st anniversary of mass deportations.  Sent suitable proclamations to Estonian organizations in the United States.
  • Within means, supported Estonian cultural events in the United States.
  • New York Cultural Days
  • The Baltic American Language Summer Studies Institute Estonian language course.
  • Supported production of the English language film, The Singing Revolution.
  • Supported Estonian performers at New Jersey’s Scanfest.
  • Supported the participation of an Estonian university student at the University of Maryland’s summer course organized by the Maryland Baltic European Consortium.
  • Supported the Estonian Archives in the United States.
  • Supported the distribution of Lauri Mälksoo’s dissertation.
  • Edited the draft of the English language History of Estonians in America 1949-2000 .

4.     EANC Heritage Fund Management

Funded EANC activities on the basis of contributions and other support, and continued investing the fund ’s capital.

5.     Estonian Retirement Home

Began a committee to explore possibilities for establishing an Estonian retirement home. However, work did not progress due to the resignation of the committee chairman.

B. SUPPORT FOR BUILDING UP THE ESTONIAN REPUBLIC

1. Coordinated EANC activities and shared information with the Estonian Embassy and    the Consulate of the Estonian Republic in the United States.

2. Coordinated with the University of Tartu, the Tallinn Technical University, and Tallinn University regarding the use of scholarship funds with these institutions.

  • Within means, supported specific programs in Estonia, such as the Estonian Christian Television film about the resettlement in the United States of refugees fleeing from the Communist occupation in Estonia, and the restoration of the Alexander Church in Narva.

C. INFORMATION SHARING

1.Estonians in the United States and EANC regions

  • Continued expanding the EANC network and cooperation with U.S. Estonian organizations, congregations and individuals. Sent them current information and monitored their activities.
  • Continued issuing EANC news in the Free Estonian Word newspaper in the Estonian and English languages.
  • Continued updating the EANC web site.
  • Continued assembling materials for the documentary history of the EANC (1952-2002).

2. Relationships in the United States Government
Maintained ties with the White House, United States government, Congress, and other offices, mainly through JBANC, but also independently, stressing:

  • that the United States should stand firm against Russia’s continuing false political attacks against Estonia and the other Baltic nations;
  • that the United States support reparations by the Soviet Union and Germany for damages done to the Republic of Estonia and its citizens during the occupation years of 1940-1991.

3. Print media, radio, and television

  • As necessary, reacted to stories about Estonia that appeared in the American media.
  • Shared information with Estonian media.

4. Ties with the Estonian President, Parliament, Government and other official offices
Wrote to the President of the Estonian Republic, the Prime Minister and the Parliament regarding the Estonian-Russian border treaty.

D. EANC ADMINISTRATION

1. Representative assembly and executive board

  • Distributed to representative assembly members the executive board meeting minutes and as needed, updated EANC membership lists with addresses.
  • Held seven executive board meetings.

 2. Funding and leading EANC activities

  • Continued with contract employees in the EANC Washington Bureau.
  • Maintained the computer, fax, and database networks.
  • Updated the database of U.S. Estonians.
  • Conducted the 2005 fund raising campaign in the Estonian-American community.
  • Terminated the lease of the New York office space.
